I did NOT Get FIRED today (updated) Strange.
There's a buzz going around that we're losing 40% of the staff in my department. Being that we're all white collar IT Technology folks, that's a substantial cut. Anyways, 4 people are expected to be let go in my office (we have 10 people). I may be one of them. We'll see Those who have been laid off. Got advise? . start working now to establish yourself as the employee to keep.
drop hints like "and remember i know where you live" or "it would be a shame if anything were to happen to that lovely family of yours" and then make sure to be seen hanging around the residences of your supervisors atger dark. they will be impressed by your resourcefulness and stamina and they will not lay you off.

I have not been laid off but if you get a severance package, it's a good idea to have an attorney look it over.

Yeah, if I'm one of the four, I will get a serverence package, and they'll keep me on the payroll 60 days before it kicks in. I honestly think I'm stronger than most of my peers and least likely to get the rift, BUT I'm at a site where there are no other peers. I'm the only one in Florida. And big companies like to colocate technology folks.

I've been laid off before. If you know prior to being let go, you may want to dust off the resume and get it out ther. You will most likely get a package to help ease the pain (2 weeks at the very least is standard). Apply for unemployment like the first day of unemployment and get that ball rolling.

I was laid off, without notice, in 2004. My suggestion is since you've got a little heads up to start sending out resumes now and to find out about any credit card insurance policies you may have. I had one on a credit card and they paid off my balance when I was laid off.

And big companies like to colocate technology folks. That's actually a good deal. Sometimes getting laid off is a good thing. At least you're not stuck with trying to do 2 peoples jobs just to keep the company afloat. And downsizing for such a small company, is usually not a good thing. Best to get out now before there is no more money for "packages". Christian Zombie Vampires

That's actuall a good thing to do, however there may be a statute, like you need to be on the program at least a month before it becomes valid. Christian Zombie Vampires

I might get fixed next wednesday

Sorry to hear that, but with your qualifications I'm sure you'd find a new job pretty fast, and the severance deal would give you some peace of mind in that process. Plus I agree with Carrie; it seems like you haven't always been happy with this job anyway, right? Even if they decide to keep you, this might make you rethink your situation and change it for the better if need be.

i've been laid off twice. i'm only echoing other's advice when i say apply for unemployment right away. first time i waited a couple weeks b/c i thought i'd be getting another job right away. in NE there is a one week waiting period toget unemployment after being laid off, and that week starts from the day you file, not the day you're laid off. get out your resume and start checking around for other employment. who knows, maybe you won't be laid off, but by looking around you'll see a job that's even better than what you have now!
and whatever you do, don't waste time on a computer posting on silly internet sites. you need to spend ALL your time, every last moment looking for another job, no time to waste here. in fact, i don't think you'll have any extra time to post at all. might as well just delete your account now.
