Joss Whedon no longer directing Wonder Woman movie

And I no longer have any interest in seeing it. sad

From Whedonesque.com:

SATIN TIGHTS NO LONGER. Joss will not be fighting for our rights after all.

You (hopefully) heard it here first: I'm no longer slated to make Wonder Woman. What? But how? My chest... so tight! Okay, stay calm and I'll explain as best I can. It's pretty complicated, so bear with me. I had a take on the film that, well, nobody liked. Hey, not that complicated.

Let me stress first that everybody at the studio and Silver Pictures were cool and professional. We just saw different movies, and at the price range this kind of movie hangs in, that's never gonna work. Non-sympatico. It happens all the time. I don't think any of us expected it to this time, but it did. Everybody knows how long I was taking, what a struggle that script was, and though I felt good about what I was coming up with, it was never gonna be a simple slam-dunk. I like to think it rolled around the rim a little bit, but others may have differing views.

The worst thing that can happen in this scenario is that the studio just keeps hammering out changes and the writer falls into a horrible limbo of development. These guys had the clarity and grace to skip that part. So I'm a free man.

Well, sorta. There is that "Goners" movie I can finally finish polishing, and plenty of other things in the hopper I've wanted to pursue. I'm as relieved as I am disappointed, and both of those things lead to drink, so that's a plus. Truly, you may be hearing some interesting things brewing in the coming months. But all potential jets therein will be visible.

But most importantly, I never have to answer THAT question again!!!! And you don't have to link to every rumor site! Finally and forever: I never had an actress picked out, or even a consistant front-runner. I didn't have time to waste on casting when I was so busy air-balling on the script. (No! Rim! There was rim!) That's the greatest relief of all. I can do interviews again!

Thanks for your time. You are the people who make the world go 'round. Or, no, science does that.

-j.

ps All right, it was Cobie Smulders. Sorry, Cobes.

I smell another Catwoman in the making. This is what happens when non-creative studio suits think they know the source material better than dudes like Whedon.

These types of movies are difficult because they are either gonna come out really good: the last Batman movie, Spiderman and the Superman or its really bad: the last X-men (ugh!) Catwoman (Double ugh!!), the Hulk (ugh infinity!!!!!)

It's like you want to stay true to the legacy and story but you have to adapt it to modern day movie making which can be complicated.

I don't think it's as complicated as all that. It's just a matter of letting the fanboys and girls have the creative control jobs, and not a market research panel or lowest-common denominator pandering exec. All it takes is some twat in a sharp suit who thinks they understand what it takes to make a decent superhero film better than the people who've geeked out their whole lives over these things to fuck up a movie.

P.S. -I will never, ever forgive Bryan Singer for leaving the X-Men franchise and subsequently fucking up what should have been a fantastic movie, X3.

X3 could have been a lot worse. It could have been 'League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen'.

Uh, that's not what I said. I said he's a good writer when he can control his urge to be clever. He can get mired down in his cute, clever, hip dialogue.

I just recently started to watch Whedon's Firefly series on TV. I kind of like it. I also bought his Serenity on DVD but haven't watched it yet, so I don't know if he's a good director yet. biggrin

I also kind of like his writing on Astonishing X-Men, but the fact that he can write a decent comic book doesn't equal a good Wonder Woman movie. confuse

Although I've read George PĂ©rez and Phil Jimenez' good runs on Wonder Woman, I've never been a big fan of Wonder Woman, so I guess a Wonder Woman movie doesn't sound particularly exciting to me, no matter who's directing it. biggrin

I couldn't bring myself to watch that one. From what I hear I really should be thankful my Muties didn't turn out like that. lol

Still, couldn't help being bummed. I knew it was going to be bad, but I was sort of hoping that the Superman movie everybody left for would've been worth the loss. It was a decent movie, but not enough to make up for X3.

I think it's okay to make changes to certain classic aspects like costumes or whathaveyou if the heart of the story and basic character traits remain as they should. I remember people bitching about the X Men being decked out in leather/vinyl for the movies, and I couldn't figure out what the big deal was. shrug

hollywood needs to realize that Wonder Woman is just not filmable. Who is gonna buy a superhero in that outfit who flies an invisible plan? its just too korny for the big screen.

ohh...and superman returns *and* both spiderman films sucked!!! mad

Thank you.

I wish we were done with super heroes.

Although I got a slight interest in the Silver Surfer, but that is just for masturbatory issues.

And that interest was totally done after seeing who will play him.

i have to agree with you on Wonder Woman. It's going to be a disaster like Catwoman.

however you didn't like spiderman? wow. i thought they were both great and my brother said they stuck to the comic book except for the second one where she found out he was spiderman.

i loved superman up until the last portion where the lovey dovey stuff started to bore the hell out of me..

the last batman was excellent.

Batman Begins, Spiderman 1&2, and X-Men 1&2 are the best hero films so far. Wonder Woman had potential if Whedon was involved(he talked about altering her costume). Wonder Woman is DC's second most powerful character(behind Supes) - I'm sure Whedon would do her justice.

oh come on...superman returns was loathed by many....i concede my distaste for spiderman isn't the norm but both of those movies were way way too long...the special effects laughable and the green goblin in the first film was just straight arse silly.

there...i've said it. sigh feels. so. good.

hey, a film is a film and should be judged on its own merits...i make no exceptions because of the genre of film.

and thats part of the problem..."geek directors" seem to want to please geeks soo much that they forget that its a film first and that it needs to stand on its own.

See now, I thought the Spider-Man movies were so successful because they brought in non-geeks during development to make the scripts (especially Spider-Man 2) more accessible to a wider audience.

The only thing that really pissed be off by the Spiderman movies was that Peter didn't invent the Web Slinger, I know its kinda petty, but I always thought that showed the intelligence of Peter Parker.

I had that first thought, too, when seeing the first post. However, I thought Superman Returns was going suck as well (which I for one don't believe it does) with Nick Cage, Tim Burton and Jon Peters involved in the early process. It still might turn itself around and be a good movie someday.

Just as long as they don't smoke a bunch of weed and try to pull something like Jack Black as Green Lantern. disbelief

so maybe now Astonishing can start coming out on that monthly schedule they promised after the book went on haitus to catch up, instead of the bi-monthly that's it's slipped back to?

probably not.
