I remember in 2000 when there was so much trouble with the "hanging chad" ballots, etc. and the obvious, yet horribly flawed, solution to the problem was to computerize the voting process. I remembered thinking then what a terrible idea this was, knowing full well how unreliable and flaky computers can be, and thinking to myself how scary it will be to have a "fully digital" election procedure where there is absolutely no tangible physical eveidence to verify the election itself.

Well, guess what? They put computers in the polls and the election is still fucked up - at least the primaries are.

Progress. Computers can fix anything.

Without the ballot itself, all you need to control an election is acess to the database, or to the person who controls it.
