Happy Mardi Gras! Anyone indulging in Fat Tuesday?
In Detroit we have a local tradition thanks to our large Polish popluation here... PACZKI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paczki Polish immigrants have popularized this type of preserve-filled doughnut in some parts of the United States, especially in Hamtramck- an enclave of Detroit. Hamtramck is known to be the only U.S. city to organize an annual Paczki-Day (Fat Tuesday) Parade, and lines can be seen up to 24 hours before the deep-fried delights go on sale at the numerous local bakeries. Many bars in town open early in the morning, and provide free entertainment, a party atmosphere, and even Paczki-clad mascots. The Paczki-Day celebration in this town is even larger than many areas have for St. Patrick's Day. Here, prunes are considered the traditional filling, but many others are used as well, including lemon, strawberry, Bavarian cream, custard, raspberry, and rarely apple. Due to French influence, paczki are eaten on Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) rather than on Fat Thursday. In the large Polish community of Chicago, and other large cities across the Midwest, paczki day is also celebrated annually by immigrants and locals alike.

I miss New Orleans very much.....with the exception of the years I've spent away being in the Army (and my infant years... )....going to all the parades and festivities was a family tradition....its good to see the city getting back to some kind of normal, but she's years....generations...away from ever getting back to what she was....
if y'all want to get a feel for OUR Mardi Gras, hop on over to www.nola.com lots of live streetcams....take a peek...I would, but the security protocols on our network prevent such frivolity..... Laizzez les bon temps roulez.....Let the good times roll!!! He was like a cock who thought the sun had risen to hear him crow.

But that's what I hear. We even have people from Metro Detroit coming down to the Glass City to get a taste. our station has been paczki central for the past five days.

I could describe it all day, but it wouldn't do the experience any justice....every year that I went was different....and when I went as an adult, adding in spirits in quantity just made it that much more vivid and fun! Even though Mardi Gras will never be what it was before Katrina, if enough folks go now, it should develop a new persona....so I would still recommend it if its in you to go.....
