His son said it was his dad's choice to separate himself like that from everyone else. It sounds like the old man was a real curmudgeon.

Yeah, because it was so cold the water in it froze and expanded. That has happened at my parents' house. They were away once and forgot to shut off the water just in case it got really cold and it did and because no one was home to use the water, it froze and there was ice all over the driveway.
