"Lost" is Back, Baby!

Anyone catch last night's episode?

Finally, more mysteries, confusions and baffling plotlines! And none of that boring ass love triangle with Kate,Jack, and Sawyer! barf

That shit was getting weak! Hopefully it's back on track.

I wish Jack would just die.

And it looks like Charlie's about to go down!

All I need is Sawyer anyway.
This one's for you.

I didn't want to give away any spoilers because California is like 3 days behind the rest of the world or something, and besides people there are generally slower!

I wasn't sure what I thought abt last night's episode.

No real island action to speak of, and just more confusion... and yet, I like Desmond so much....

Yeah, but what's been missing recently is these oddball back stories that made the existence on the island so doubly weird. I was glad to see that again. I don;t care so much about resolution, I enjoy the show for the proliferation of confusion, the hints at meaning, the personality stew!

Oh, I enjoy it too, but I need to wrap my mind around something concrete every now and again.

Shit, as long as Sawyer lives, I'll keep watching for those brief topless moments regardless.

I have read a few of these types of posts on the net. Personally, I was confused. But not in a way that turned me off. I think the themes they are introducing are not TV fare. A lot of this stuff you get in books where they lend themselves better to the medium.

What if the back stories and not back stories but actually an alternate reality. One being that they get on the plane, the other being they did not.

I think what we are dealing with is going to take some time to wrap our brains around. I think the issue is there is absolutely no point of reference for this show, which makes it confusing. If this show took place in outer space where theories of time and space travel are often explored, it might make more sense. I also think that the subject matter at hand may not lend itself to a TV audience. They have been hinting at The Watchmen and The 3rd Policeman as where this show might be going, as I mentioned above, the concepts in both of those books do not make for TV fare.

Though, it seems they are doing a decent job in trying to relay what is going on without doing so in laymans terms. This is unfortunate, because I think many fans of the show need things spelled out and concrete answers instead of ones that leave much open to the imagination and interpretation. The only times the producers have spelled anything out is when the audience start misleading themselves (i.e. Jae’s suicide). I think another issue the show has is that it takes multiple viewings to get an episode. This was a pleasant side effect in season 1 and part of season 2,, but I think the audience is tired of having to watch the show again to understand. I also think that, while the easter eggs are great and provide further meaning to the show, they are so hidden, that unless you actively research the show, you miss it. Again, the show reveals itself in such a way that you get the answers you seek, you just don’t understand them….yet.

Why is it a cop out? We are introduced to the notion that Desomnd is in some sort of loop and that he's trying to change what is already predestined. What if he has already? Or Am I just talking crazy? Wait...don't answer that biggrin

Because there are so many of these kinds of potential explainations: Hurley's possible psychosis, the conspiracy theories of Dharma etc, some sort of native island magic.

To settle on one would ruin it! I like the way all of these different potential explainations muscle up against one another.

I think a lot of fans are just tired of the never ending plot twist and turns and the lack of logic, which would explain this:

ah yes the ratings..which are the "proof in the pudding" that LOST is "losing it" That artice pretty much offers no insight. It's only one sentence of interjection. Nothing on the fact that there is NOTHING on before LOST now. Or the fact that it's on at 10pm. There are plenty of reasons to point at for low numbers. It's a cult show that has more viewers than it should to begin with.

MANY fans were loving last nights episode.

Sorry the article offers more than "one sentence of interjection". I'll just post it.

ABC drama loses more ratings ground due to new 10 p.m. time slot and fan frustration.
Lost

Lost

ABC's Lost scored a 5.6 rating in 18-49s, with 12.8 million viewers overall, according to Nielsen Reasearch. That's down 2 million viewers from last week, when the show returned from a three month hiatus.

Lost has endured a rocky road in this, its third season. The season three premiere was down 20 percent from season two's premiere, and Media Life Magazine suggests today that "the most likely reason [for the ratings dip] is that fans are dissatisfied with the drama’s dragging plotlines. Message boards are full of complaints about producers’ failure to tie up almost any of the mysteries on the show, instead adding new ones as well as new characters."

I think personally the show started spiraling downward with the introduction of the taillies that did nothing but show up take over the last part of the 2nd season and then exit stage left.

This season has left me bored, though I never cared for the Kate/Jack/Sawyer triangle which I felt took the focus away from the Island and turned the show into a soap opera cliche.

So, here's a theory. Desmond tells Penelope to search for electromagnetic activity in one of his time travel flashbacks. That's how she goes looking for him (remember the end of Season 2 with the Portugese guys?)

I think it's best summed up with Andreas (from Lostblog)

The Critics are Wrong
1 week, 3 days ago by Andreas
Read more: Article, Random Thoughts
With the return of Lost, a lot of TV critics and columnists are writing articles about the show. Some like Lost, some don’t. What surprises me the most about these critics is that - 1. they still want more answers and - 2. the authors write like if they were the global representative of all Lost fans.

Unanswered questions
To address the first part about Lost needing to answer more questions and mysteries, any fan of the show knows that questions are being answered and the producers have promised to answer even more questions.

Writing that Lost needs to answer more questions has become the standard formula for getting your article published in the papers, but honestly, if you want to earn not only your paycheck but also some respect from those of us who actually watch the show, maybe it’s a good idea to actually know what you are writing about.

My name is Legion
To address the second issue with critics assuming that they speak for all of us when they write things like “Lost fans have gotten tired of the show”, they seem to be forgetting that Lost is still one of the most popular shows on television. When you have more viewers than the population of several European countries (and let’s not forget, Lost is very popular in the entire world, not just in the states) I don’t really think it’s justified to complain about a lack of viewer interest.

The fact is that Lost is very popular, but I don’t think anyone really thought that Lost would be THE cool show forever. At the moment Heroes gets all the free champagne and VIP-passes, but like with anything else, fame doesn’t last forever. Next year another show will be new and amazing but Heroes, like Lost, will still be a great show.

When viewers understood that Lost was more than your everyday beach drama, those who didn’t like the Sci-Fi stopped watching and ratings fell.

With the complexity of Lost, it’s natural that the storyline can’t be everyone’s cup of tea. Sure, it is a character drama, but it’s a character drama revolving around a very complex Sci-Fi story with mysterious scientists and smoke monsters. I love Lost, but if some of my friends don’t like the show, I don’t mind. I don’t enjoy everything they like and that’s just fine.

While I don't quote Andreas' views as fact. He does make some really good points, like LOST being a huge phenom Worldwide. And that he points out that many of these articles are simply rehash and not news. LOST did win it's time slot last night and the week before.

Apparently turning the key thrust Desmond back into the Past, but he had knowlege of the future in that past even though he decides to do exactly the same thing the second time around because the jewelry peron told him it was his destiny.

Second time a "psychic" has sent some one to the island.
