This is where it's headed.....

I better prepare a eulogy or something. sad

Ok.....I'm more pissed than anything because I really dread having to load the original stuff back on there that's no longer on my harddrive. Plus, I could kick myself for not putting those random songs and mash ups I've downloaded on a cd. Now some of those might be gone forever. sigh

I'm getting one next time. I heard you can upload what's on it directly to your hard drive if you wanna burn something.....unlike iPods where you have to create playlists in order to burn a cd. lol

Then that whole sending them off to replace the battery thing is fucked up too. I got caught up with the glitz of them sigh I know better now. I'll do research about the competition next time.

I feel your pain....I had TWO 20gb RIO Carbon players lock up on me....paperweights...with almost 8000 songs between them....many rare vinyl B-sides and DJ mixes that I have NO CHANCE of ever retrieving....

but I'm now very satisfied with my creative zenV plus....4 gb flash player...instead of a hard drive player.....still sucks that I lost all of my music....but thanks to the efforts of some folks, I have tunes to make it thru this deployment.....

Oh man.....that's awful sad I'll really have to look into the Creative Zen. I've been hearing too many good things about them and too many bad things about iPods. Could be because so many people have them compared to people with the Zens. The chances of hearing about technical kinks are greater for iPods. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to retrieve all of those crazy mash-ups that were available on certain sites only. Ah well....shit happens.....life goes on.

lol I can't wait to see how that whole iPhone is gonna go down. Or is it out already? I could care less about high tech phones though.....as long as I can talk on it and it fits in my pocket then I'm cool with it.

I have an iRiver iHP-140 40 GB hard drive player which I have used since 2004. It's a little bulkier (actually a lot bulkier) than a comparable iPod, but I bought it because it supposedly had better sound than the iPod, the battery life was twice as long as the iPod (16 hours between charges), plus it plays both OGG and WMA files as well as MP3s. It still plays just fine, and I hope it lasts a little bit longer. music Unfortunately though, I don't believe that iRiver makes any hard drive MP3 players anymore sad so I can't get any MP3 players from that company any larger than 4 gigabytes.

I don't get people who are dissing the iPod.....I've been using them for years now, without any problems.....just bought a new one last summer because the old one was too vintage...

Easy to use, great to look at, good fun!

And everyone knows you should never get rid of your back up files on your hard-drive....wacky

I've owned 3 iPods since introduction (2 normal iPods and one Shuffle) and they all have performed flawlessly. I've sold them to friends when I'm done and, as far as I'm aware, they are all still working great. My mother has had the cheapest model iPod you can buy for 2+ years, goes running/walking with it, and it's still great.

if iPods had a measurably greater failure rate than the norm, they wouldn't be in the position they are today. Of course, there's always a bad 'apple in the bunch' but people who have them die right and left are just cursed, imo. lol

...and Abierman is right... who in their right mind is copying everything to the media player and not keeping a backup???

I got my first ( a 15GB) 4 years ago and it was working flawless untill I traded it for my new one. I traded it because I wanted GB's.....I still have it, but I just never use it anymore.
For the rest, I completely agree with what jtfolden has posted!

I don't doubt that some of the iPod failures that I know of are just products of operator headspace, but I know several who had issues with them right out of the box...so who knows?

As far as keeping backups, last year, when my RIOs bit the dust, I had all of my music on my laptop hard drive.....and as luck would have it, that hard drive died a horrible death as well...apparently it contracted a particularly nasty virus that imbedded itself deep in the core BIOS and killed it....so I had the triple whammy with lost music....
