One has to treat their children, but can also wonder why adhd and the like is on the rise. Well, I'm not sure I believe ADHD is even on the rise. Maybe it is, but it is wayyyyy over diagnosed. Not Jersey's son, I'm not sayin'. Je obviously lloked into every option possible with his son. But I know doctors are diagnosing every other kid with ADD these days.

It's really not the child's fault if the society's preferences for correct behaviour doesn't suit him / her.

It sounds as if you have wrestled over this decision and, as the father, you know him best and have done what is right for him. More important is how you feel after what your Mum has said. As everyone has said, she will come round. Is there anyone you can speak to about how you are coping with your Mum's lack of support? You're obviously very strong but don't neglect yourself during all of this. Give yourself credit for making this difficult decision without your Mum's support.

Dude, he's YOUR son...not hers. It's not like you brought him to the doctors for the first time and pumped him with drugs. You've kept him off and researched this. So tell her to mind her business or just don't tell her anything anymore. It's obvious that it's her way or no way....

Parents
Sorry to hear she's giving you such a hard time while she should be giving you support as your parent. Stick to you're plan no matter what she pulls on you. It sounds like she still needs to learn a lot from life. Take care of your boy, put your energy in him, he needs it more than her.

Hopefully she'll come around. The important thing is that you're doing what's best for your child. It seems like you and your ex have done your homework on the subject.

jers, you're making the right choice.
My brother was diagnosed ADHD, but my father was like your mom and was so vehemently opposed to even TRYING medication, that they never did. My brother continues to do poorly in school..and I can't help but think if he was on meds he would be much better off than he is now. He even got my brother to be the same way by telling him stories of kids who commited suicide after being on the drug and asking my mom "Do you want him to kill himself?!" right in front of his face. It's really fucked up that someone would let their own ignorance and insecurites interfere with their son's well-being.

Jersey-
There are no words to describe what you're facing. I'm quite sure you know what I'd say here. Outside of that, I've read your comments to know that you will handle this the best way you know how. Hey man...handle it. Do you. The Spirit seems to show in time of need.
