Looking back, I do realize we really didn't have that much growing up. My friend's and neighbor's families were far better off than my own, but it never occurred to me at the time. And if my mom said we couldn't afford something, then that was that. Although she also always told me I had champagne taste on a beer budget. lol

lol i mean it made me think y'know dad did everything he could to keep it together and he did, how they used to acquire instruments for me wasn't even a thought sacrificing themselves for me.

I do that all the time. I remember just hanging out with my friends, jumping rope, playing tag, whatever. We all were poor so there were no rich kids that had all the later stuff for us to get jealous over. Now I am much better off and pretty fucking miserable. lol

Mo' money, mo' problems. nod

I always say it could have been worse, it wasn't like we didn't have a roof over our heads or food to eat, so for that I am thankful.

My kids get all the stuff I didn't have and they are really great kids in spite of it. They have rolled with the punches through good and bad stuff.

We were only poor when my older brother and I were really young. My younger brothers did not experience things like powdered milk. barf

Exactly. But, I think about how my dad drove a truck for 12 hours a day, six days a week just to keep things that way. He was a brilliant man and I know he would have been happy doing something else, but he did what he had to do to take care of his wife and six kids.

not just with being broke- but with other thoughts ... like how about 2 blocks from where i sit NOW ... my grandparents lived ... and --- its a small american city ... which has CHANGED drastically ... and ... well to put it bluntly - my grandma and me would walk to the movies ! like a disney flick on a sat night ! ... but today - NO WAY would i walk at night with my kids !!!

on the subject of poor ... i think we didnt know how rich or poor we were .... i do remember how dad and mom never had new cars back then ... and now look at us .... my mom buys a new one every couple yrs ...

That's something else I miss about being a kid: Holidays would find my grandmother's house packed. Now there are barely ten people visiting on holidays.

It was always just the four of us on holidays when I was a kid. Once in a while my Gradparents would make an appearance.

Now a days, I have holidays at my house and invite EVERYONE just so my kids'll have the holidays, I didn't.

We lived in the projects(early 60s-mid 70s), but my family wasn't poor. We were middle class, and so were most of our neighbors. Both my parents worked and we had everything a suburban family had.

Looking back, I'm grateful I had smart, hard-working folks who stressed education, and not using race as an excuse to fail.

Mach

We lived in a huge old farm house on an acre of land.

I had an incredible childhood filled with love, laughter, travel and friends

We always had food and warmth and clothes

I felt then as I feel now

abundant and blessed

Yep, same here. My brother & I never suffered for lack of anything. I always thank Pop for doing the things he did. Sometimes I didn't care for his stern ways, but looking back, I'm glad I had a tough father.
