My partner and I celebrated Valentines day once. Even though I get a little down when asked "what are you doing for Valentines day" and I reply with "nothing" as though I don't have anyone special (because if you do, you should be celebrating it right?), I still think the pressure and cost of the day is above and beyond feeling a little dispondent about not doing anything.

All I am saying is that personally I don't agree with being ridiculous about the holiday, i.e. not spending extravagant amounts of money and going to ridiculous levels to tell your partner you love them. Just saying it is enough. But I think it becomes a power play when someone uses that sentiment as leverage for doing absolutely nothing for their partner, not even an I love you.
