Mom Allegedly Had Child Watch Sex 'To Learn' Pair Pleads Not Guilty
POSTED: 6:55 pm CST February 10, 2007 PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A Rhode Island mother and her boyfriend are headed to trial on charges they had intercourse in front of the woman's 9-year-old daughter as a way to teach the girl about sex. Rebecca Arnold, of Woonsocket, R.I., and her boyfriend, David Prata, have pleaded not guilty to felony child-neglect charges. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for next month. When questioned by an investigator from the state Department of Children, Youth and Families, Prata, 33, said he and Arnold, 36, had sex "all the time" in front of the child and that "we don't believe in hiding anything." He said the girl would often be on the bed watching as the couple had sex. Though they did not ask her to leave, they also did not force her to remain on the bed, Prata said. Asked why he thought a child that age should know about sexual acts, Prata replied, "We wanted to prepare her so she would know how," according to a report from the investigator, Vanessa E. Cisela. The allegations against the couple were revealed in December 2004 after the girl went to live with her biological father in North Adams, Mass. after spending the summer with her mother in Woonsocket. A teacher in North Adams called the Child Abuse Hotline to report that the girl, who is now 11, said her mother and her boyfriend had sex in front of her. The child told a Massachusetts social services investigator that her mother and Prata never touched her or tried to include her in the sex. Woonsocket police arrested Prata and Arnold in February 2005. The couple is accused of "providing an environment that is lewd and depraved in a manner that makes their home unfit for the child to live in," according to court records. Prata and Arnold are free on bail pending a March 19 pretrial conference in Family Court. They could each face one to three years in prison if convicted or a maximum $1,000 fine, or both. Odd, but how can such a thing be illegal? I can understand current moral standards, but throughout the history children were watching adults have intercourse together all the time. Oeople used to live in small, one room cottages all around the world. And still do. | |

yeah...its creepy but i dont see how its illegal. Well, in Rhode Island, it's illegal for a woman to perform oral sex on a man, so I can definitely see how this would be classified as illegal in that state. Also, I think that this kind of thing should be illegal under child endangerment laws. I think that child is one step away from being sexually abused by her mother's boyfriend (if he's even around by then) if it hasn't happened already. I never watched my parents have sex with each other or with any of their girlfriends (no, that is not a typo...) and I can handle myself just fine in the bedroom. You learn how to have sex by having sex, not by watching your mother and her boyfriend traumatize you for life.  | |

So basicaly no one should have sex with kids living in the house?  I am not saying that I agree with what the mother did, but how many parents here had sex with their kids home and had one of them walk in? Would that ALSO be considered raising your child in a lewd household? | |

Most children are aware of their parents' sexual activity, that's normal. It's also normal and healthy for parents to talk with their children about sex but having sex in front of a nine year old so that "she can learn" is not just creepy but borders on sexual abuse. Basically, this mother and her boyfriend are including this child in their sexual acts by not excluding her from the room. For them to start actively having sex with this child doesn't seem that far off in the future by any stretch of the imagination. It would be one thing if the child just saw her mother and the boyfriend naked because nudity does not equal sex but having sex in front of this child is really blurring the parent-child boundary. Also, the fact that the man involved is not her father makes this boundary even blurrier. These people did not merely have sex with a child in the house, they had sex in front of her and that's just wrong. Seriously now, go back and read that article. Would you have sex in front of your own child or would you just pop in a kids video, give the kid a sandwich, and handle your business behind closed doors? | |
