Revisiting Eddie Murphy's "Delirious" on DVD I bought the DVD of Eddie Murphy's Delirious from his 1983 concert filmed in Washington, DC. It's amazing how much has changed since his performance. Right off, he uses the word "faggot" and excludes them from the audience, joking about homosexuals, because "they're homosexuals"... (years later, he would be pulled over by the LAPD, as he was seen picking up a known prostitute transvestite. He said he was just given him a ride home) Now you can't even use the word "faggot" on tv (see Isaiah Washington from Grey's Anotomy). I think that's a good thing. Then he talks about "this new thing called AIDS"... On a lighter note, he uses a camera from a audience member, one of those old Kodak 110s! Funny shit... Talking about the "record" James Brown just put out, where you have to grab the "Needle" and put it back on the record to make sure you heard James right. Also, "you know, James has been performing for twenty years, now". He mentioned his brother Charlie's name in his bits about three or four times, before we ever knew who Charlie Murphy ever was. Yes, a lot has changed since 1983. It's still funny. Un-PC topics and all... btw - what ever happened to the Bus Boys? |

I loved the Aunt Bunny story and the Ice Cream one. I used to watch this and Raw all the time. I still remember the jokes, they were quite funny. Like the JB lyrics and Elvis singing his lines "Lemonade, that cool refreshing drink". I am sure I'd get more out of it now as when I was young I didn't get the James Brown jokes.
Oh and of course there was the end story of his dad "punishing" the mom saying she couldn't call her friends and the rules for "Vivian". Not sure where the "Now that's a fire" comes from or the boomerang shoe story (his mom threw the shoe). Christian Zombie Vampires

aside from the prolific homophobia he exerts in this, i still think it and "delerious' are damn funny.
but i have a hard time watching them because of the extreme homophobia. both are in my netflix queue though. I haven't seen them since the late 90s. Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely. - Lord Acton

I finally saw Delirious after years of people telling me how much better than RAW it is...and I don't see what they're talking about. RAW is alot more funny to me.

I think Delerious was so original, which makes it better. RAW went back on the same jokes and made some of them funnier. Christian Zombie Vampires

I think Delerious was so original, which makes it better. RAW went back on the same jokes and made some of them funnier. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I saw RAW first. I didn't pick up on any "recycled" jokes.

The homophobia wasn't just prolific--it was irresponsible and dangerous. How many folks bought these attitudes? That casual contact with a homosexual would give you aids? Ridiculous and irresponsible. He made homosexuals out to be sex crazed characters, while he himself spent have his routine on sex. That being said, some of it was really funny. But not enough for me to by the DVD and sit through that mess.
