(AP) PITTSBURGH The father of a young girl who died of exposure had knocked her unconscious because he was angry, then took her outside in subfreezing temperatures and left her there, police said before the man's arraignment Thursday.

Nyia Miangel Page, who was about to turn 2, was found dead Sunday on a wooded knoll about a 10 minute walk from the family's home. Tiny footprints in the snow suggested she had gotten up and wandered around before she died, police said.

Her father, William Lorenzo Page, 23, of Braddock, was arrested on charges of criminal homicide, kidnapping, false reports and simple assault. He did not have an attorney in court Thursday morning, and was jailed without bond.

Page told police he woke up early Saturday and found the girl awake and playing near a mirror in the hallway, according to the criminal complaint. He said he got mad when the girl wouldn't go back to bed so he hit her so hard she hit her head and was unconscious, the complaint said.

Page then took her outside wrapped in a blanket and left her, police said.

An autopsy determined Nyia died of hypothermia, but the Allegheny County Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide because investigators said it was unreasonable to assume the child got to the wooded location alone.

The site was about a 10-minute walk from her home, a trek that would have included climbing 17 snowy steps up to a wooded knoll.

Nyia's family reported her missing Saturday morning after another child alerted them that the toddler wasn't in her bed.

Nyia's mother told police she last saw the girl after Nyia tried to crawl into bed with her parents about 12:30 a.m. Saturday. The mother told police she put the youngster back into her own bed in an upstairs room.

Police, emergency crews and bloodhounds searched in 20-degree temperatures for most of two days before finding the little girl's body.

there was a story here too of a young mother who left her minutes old newborn that she delivered herself on the step of a nearby house in the extreme cold. she eventually came forward and said she saw lights on inside the house and heard a dog barking when she went to the door so she was sure they would find the child. thankfully the people inside did.

WTF..is right!!! I've heard about 5 stories this week on the news about stuff like this, and you know there are lots more that don't get reported. It really hurts me to hear about stuff like this. It is important that we hear about it though so we know stuff like this still happens.

...what a flippin' jackass., as mentioned earlier, when he is put behind bars, he will undoubtedly get his ars kicked!! There are alot of people in prison for murder, but ( for whatever reason), they have real issues with people who abuse/murder/rape children ( I suppose if there is a bright side to this) it's knowing his trouble is far from over. This man has serious mental issues. I hope the mother of the child gets the heck out before he can do further damage to anyone in their home. God be with that family.

What A FUCKING ASSHOLE I was so angry when I read this. What a douchebag, I wish I could scald him with some acids in the lab --slowly and painfully. How could someone do this to a child. How?!?!!

Seriously though, what did he think would happen? He didn't go out and get her. The mother thought the girl had disappeared. It took 2 days to find the body. He knew what he was doing, and hoped it would look like an accident. If he didn't want her dead, he would have brought her back, or told the mother where he left the girl as soon as she was discovered missing. I hope someone kicks his ass (and worse) in jail!

I seldom cry, but when I read this today I couldn't help it. What gets to me is that the little girl was all alone in the cold when she died and was fully concious (walking around). I WANT THAT BASTARD DEAD! I hope he burns in hell.

This really angers me!!!!

Is it just me, or are the majority of these abuse or negligence cases that make the news involving young parents, or young boyfriends/girlfriends of young parents?

I know plenty of people my age make great parents, but maybe there's something to be said for not getting knocked up right out of high school.
