Victorian. Like, I love the house in the movie 'Pracital Magic'.

Or, this one:

I would love it to have 11 ft ceilings, cozy formal and family rooms, 3-4 bedroom suites, a greenhouse, gardens...

Near the water, but also within walking distance of the heart of the village. A happy place. A place where having locks on the doors is just a suggestion.

Locks on the doors is the least of your problems....I'm looking at all the intricate wood details. Whatever the climate you live in, that's in the category of high maintenance. Termite inspections on a regular basis. Previous owners who kept the place up??.... if not, you'll make up for it.

I know...I know... sigh

But, I still want one! smile

I want an Eastlake-style Victorian, like the one from "Practical Magic". I already live in a 19-room Eastlake but it needs a lot of cosmetic help. So, I guess I kind of already live in my dream home, my dream is just for it to be restored and finished already. lol

I want a huge house just so that all my friends can come and stay with me on the weekends.

I have this weird thing for houses. I can spend all day going out and looking at them. Kind of "window shopping". As you may know I live in the South Bay of the San Francisco Bay area and there are sooooo many beautiful homes around. WOODSIDE, LOS GATOS, SARATOGA. We have tons of VICTORIAN homes, Eichler homes.
Do you all remember the estate they used in DYNASTY. Well it really wasn't in Denver. It's here in Woodside. It's called the Filloli Mansion. South of San Francisco.

I'd like to find some condo arrangement with maintenance taken care of. Something definitely not "big," but just sizable enough for a small family to be comfortable. Near a city, with a view and someplace grassy for my kid to play would be nice.

As for style, I'm an old-world European type. Hardwood floors, interior brick walls, ivy-covered Tudor-style exterior with coach lanterns, cobblestone streets and the like would be PERFECT! (Maybe I could zap myself back to 19th century London or Provence.) hmmm

As a pre-war-apartment-dweller, I love that you specify the water pressure bit. lol thumbs up!

Co-sign. I lived for about two years in a former Catholic girls' high school built in 1908. It had the good sunlight (thanks to new, 10-foot tall windows that faced east) and a great location... on the main street in downtown Indianapolis, near both my school and my office. The building had just undergone a pretty decent renovation, and the price was great too... I think $560/month for our one-bedroom unit.

However, the water system was horrible. disbelief IIRC the pressure was acceptable, but there were constant other problems. And instead of doing "proper" repairs (maybe they should have replaced the whole thing during the renovation), they'd make quick fixes just to keep it running. We'd constantly get notices about the water being shut off for repairs... one day I forgot about this and was in the shower, with a head covered in shampoo, when the water cut out. Fortunately, there was some bottled water in the fridge, which I used to rinse off. lol

Any ghost stories to share from that place. It looks awesome.

Yes, but you'll be a slave to your home. Unless the plumbing and electric wiring has been re-done, it'll be a constant headache. Not to mention the heating and electric bills on a monthly basis.

I eventually want to expatriate and live in an apartment/home somewhere in western or northern Europe. Maybe Amsterdam, Berlin or Stockholm.

eek that's the house? wow... it's beautiful Meg!

nod That's the house. Pat totally remodeled the inside for them, I haven't been there yet but Megs has and she loves it. They're going to fill it with a huge family biggrin . That's a man made lake in the back, for swimming and rowboats, it's only 4 feet deep.
Meg will tell you more when she gets the chance. biggrin

You'd probably love what he's done to the inside, it's all been customized for everyone who's going to live there. Nothing "McOrdinary" in there.
It's the house that love built. mushy

Sure, hardwood floors, burnt adobe, (brick is too expensive, and block is unappealing) rather than mahogany accents, mesquite, for a library and doors. Something energy efficient. Limit the dead space and high ceilings in every room that run up the climate control bills. Go to a salvage place for door knobs and unusual light fixtures, even tile for bathrooms. Those places are a gold mine and cheap! Stuff from the 1920's, 30's etc. I live in a southwest climate. Outside wood does not last long.
