Or, this one: I would love it to have 11 ft ceilings, cozy formal and family rooms, 3-4 bedroom suites, a greenhouse, gardens... Near the water, but also within walking distance of the heart of the village. A happy place. A place where having locks on the doors is just a suggestion. Locks on the doors is the least of your problems....I'm looking at all the intricate wood details. Whatever the climate you live in, that's in the category of high maintenance. Termite inspections on a regular basis. Previous owners who kept the place up??.... if not, you'll make up for it.

i would love to be able to take over my father's farm and live in the house my grandfather built. alas, that is not going to happen.
alternatively i would love to pick that house up and move it somewhere else alas that is not likely either lol and another fantasy i have had is to turn the century old barn on the farm into a really cool house. looooong shot too and lastly, i have had a house in my head since highschool where we had to draft it out for drafting class. the most important feature to me is a large bright kitchen that connects to a solarium with chairs for reading, lots of plants and a weight bench machine. conveniently, this room is right beside an indoor lap pool. the living room would have a library slash music room off the side that would have large floor to ceiling solid wood pocket doors. there would be a piano and guitars and great books on the wall. my bathroom would have a bay window with a free standing claw foot cast iron tub so that while soaking in the tub you have a great view of our lovely treed and private estate of course there would be a separate walk in multiple person shower too. the basement would be a walk out so that for either a parent or teenager there would be more independance. oh and between the upstairs children's room there is a lounge that doubles as play space when they are small and hang out space when they are older. the computer and tv are there, but when it is homework time the games go off and there would be a freestanding desk for each kid. too bad i don't actually play the lottery

The actual house would be fairly big, in different levels and with plenty of customized rooms: film screening room, relaxation room, writer's den, spa, big kitchen, comfy guest room, veranda with detachable glass walls, and - because of my paranoia - a bomb shelter with lots of supplies, backup generator, fresh water filter etc. oh hang on, I think I will be moving in with you - but I will need a studio in there somewhere

I have this weird thing for houses. I can spend all day going out and looking at them. Kind of "window shopping". As you may know I live in the South Bay of the San Francisco Bay area and there are sooooo many beautiful homes around. WOODSIDE, LOS GATOS, SARATOGA. We have tons of VICTORIAN homes, Eichler homes. Do you all remember the estate they used in DYNASTY. Well it really wasn't in Denver. It's here in Woodside. It's called the Filloli Mansion. South of San Francisco. M [Edited 2/8/07 12:56pm] My God, I do that too! I've been known to spend entire weekends going to open houses just to check out the pretty new properties. I get made fun of for that. I want an Eastlake-style Victorian, like the one from "Practical Magic". I already live in a 19-room Eastlake but it needs a lot of cosmetic help. So, I guess I kind of already live in my dream home, my dream is just for it to be restored and finished already.

Anx said: you know, i think i'd like to live on cape cod.
never thought of it until just now. that would be nice, though. My grandmother lives there, and I usually visit her every summer. The Cape is nice... despite being so close to Boston, people are pretty laid-back there, and I like the overall casual atmosphere. The two biggest problems IMHO are: 1) too many people there in the summer; and 2) it's expensive. But since we're assuming that money is no object, #2 is a non-issue. Back when I lived in an Indianapolis high-rise, the management advertised that housekeeping service was available for a fee. They didn't say how much, though, and I assumed that if you had to ask, you probably couldn't afford it. Shortly before I moved out, I found out that it was actually quite inexpensive. I forget the exact price, but I would have gladly paid someone to come in once a week. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

As a pre-war-apartment-dweller, I love that you specify the water pressure bit. Co-sign. I lived for about two years in a former Catholic girls' high school built in 1908. It had the good sunlight (thanks to new, 10-foot tall windows that faced east) and a great location... on the main street in downtown Indianapolis, near both my school and my office. The building had just undergone a pretty decent renovation, and the price was great too... I think $560/month for our one-bedroom unit. However, the water system was horrible. IIRC the pressure was acceptable, but there were constant other problems. And instead of doing "proper" repairs (maybe they should have replaced the whole thing during the renovation), they'd make quick fixes just to keep it running. We'd constantly get notices about the water being shut off for repairs... one day I forgot about this and was in the shower, with a head covered in shampoo, when the water cut out. Fortunately, there was some bottled water in the fridge, which I used to rinse off. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

My dream home? Maybe one of those hotel/condo developments... I keep getting flyers in the mail advertising them, even though I lack the $500,000 needed just to buy a studio. It'd be nice to have the services of a hotel (e.g., room service, housekeeping, laundry) available on a daily basis. Too tired/lazy to make dinner? Fine... I'll just call room service and have it brought up.
The problem is that, at least here in Seattle, they're all downtown. It's a fine downtown, and my office is there, but I prefer my current neighborhood, which I think is a better location for living. There's so much within walking distance, including a great grocery store (where the wine stewards know me by name and set aside good stuff for me), tons of restaurants, and two independent movie theaters. Also, we're just across I-5 from downtown, so my commute is very short, with a trolleybus stopping at my building every 15 minutes. I rather like my current place, which is a one-bedroom unit with a den, located in a building with three floors of apartments above street-level commercial suites. (I used to have a studio on the top floor that had a balcony and great views of both the skyline and Mt. Rainier, but a studio is no longer sufficient now that I have someone living with me.) My only major complaint is the lack of air conditioning, but that's mainly because I lived for so long in the Midwest, where A/C is a necessity, not a luxury.
