Hey Ivy- I'm rootin' for ya!
I finally got my act together a couple of years ago when my doctor told me I had to lose weight because my cholesterol was dangerously high. That, in combination with displaying my bouncing man-titties on the stage next to Prince at the House of Blues was enough to make me get serious about losing weight. Since then I have lost over 40 lbs, but it was a sloooow process, which sucks, but ultimately is the healthiest way to lose weight. Don't do anything that causes you to lose weight fast cuz most likely you'll gain it back fast too. It's hard not to get discouraged but you have to have faith and focus on how good it is for your body even if you don't see the numbers on the scale decrease right away (side note: avoid the damn scale for the first month or two-- it'll only piss u off ). It's truly a mental exercise as much as any physical one. There's a lot of good tasting healthy food out there, but the real key, as has been said already, is portion control and frequency. 5 to 6 small meals a day is ideal. Low fat is not always the answer and low carb sure as hell isn't either- more than anything it all boils down to calories. Also there are good fats out there that you can and should still eat. Bad fats such as transfats, saturated fats, etc. you should stay away from. There are good and bad carbs too: white rice, white potatoes, and white bread= bad carbs Good carbs such as brown rice, sweet potatoes, and whole grain bread are really good for you and give you sustained energy Diet alone is going to take a long time to see results so ya gotta add some exercise in the mix. I'm not gonna babble out all the different things to do for exercise here, but I'll be your personal trainer if ya want-- hit me up girl.

DO you know how to determine what an ideal heart rate should be for me as I exercise?[/quote] right back at ya sweetie! It is based on your age (and I have no idea what your age is). For me (I'm 35) it should be somewhere between 120 to 160. 120-140 is good for fat burning but you need to maintain that heart rate for at leats 20 minutes for it to be worth it, and ideally for 30 minutes to an hour. Gimme a call sometime (I'll send ya my digits in an org note) and I'll help ya out [Edited 2/6/07 12:17pm]

I did the FitDay website thing. I consumed about 1800 calories today and that is with eating better. God knows what I was consuming before.
Today I had: Breakfast Apple Coffee Yogurt Lunch Turkey club Mashed potatoes Dinner Baked tilapia Spinach During the day, I also had a ham sandwich on wheat. But at least it had reduced fat cheese on it. If you guys saw what I used to eat on a daily basis. My diet still consists mostly of carbs. I'll try and do better tomorrow.

This doesn't that bad just lose the mashed potatoes and your gold. My is simple. Treat this as you just learned that something you've thought you knew was wrong and you're correcting it for the rest of your life. Don't expect to be perfect all the time but relize when you are. It's a lifestyle change that starts in your perspective just as much as counting carbs,

I'm with you on the healthy diet plan. I've got a goal of 39lbs(1lb for every year that I;ve been around- lawd I'm getting old-lol) by August and so far I've lost 10. I've cut out alot of the sweets and salts. I've also starting packing lunch. We have a fridge at work so I pack lunch for the week and leave there. This way I'm not tempted to jump in my car and head to get fast food. I've also started walking as well. It comes down to moderation and just being aware of what you eat. Iknow you will reach your goal. Just Call Me Afrochick

It is difficult for me to diet. In high school and college I wrestled so dieting - basically not eating - was my life. I worked out so hard that I didn't think about eating. My highest competive weight was 132 lbs, and that is when I was 23. I weighed 112 lbs my senior year in high school. I now weigh 160. I only know how to diet one way. I can lose 20 lbs in two weeks and I now that is not healthy.

ok, so i didn't have "junk food" per se yesterday.
but i haven't gone to the pool yet and i haven't filled up my water container. only good thing i manage to keep up with everyday is my protein drink in the morning. last time i found my appetite changed the more active i was so i don't intend on forcing change but creating change. but i definately want to drink more water. i don't drink 8 glasses of anything combined a day let alone water.

This is what I would do if I had to compete twenty pounds lighter in two weeks. First, I would commit to working out three hours a day. I wouldn't do any weight training, just high intensity cardio. I would wear the sauna suits with about four layers of sweats on top of that. I would not drink anything but water and juice. My diet would consist of a small cup of fruit in the morning, chicken breasts, and vegetables. That's it. The key is that I would workout so hard that I would lose three to four pounds each workout. This is all water weight to begin with, but in two weeks I could lose it.
