Not a football fan? Check out Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl

By Rick Kushman | MCT News Service

This Sunday is one of my favorite TV days, and it comes down to two words: "Puppy Bowl."

The puppies are back almost all day on Animal Planet for the cheapest, most pointless and, clearly most adorable, Super Bowl counterprogramming on Earth.

The Super Bowl - excuse me, officially it's Super Bowl XLI, because this matters so much it gets a Roman numeral (it's pronounced "zleee") - is TV's annual biggest show. It drew nearly 91 million viewers last year, and is responsible for more beer sales than any other day. Including St. Patrick's Day. I think. Actually, I made that up. But doesn't it sound right?

The Puppy Bowl - excuse me, officially Puppy Bowl III - (starting at 6 p.m.) averages about 2 million viewers, which for Animal Planet, is about the same windfall as a Super Bowl audience.

Whoever thought this up at Animal Planet must have earned a major bonus. The thing can't cost more than a couple dollars to produce. They take a large pen, paint it to look like a football field, fill it with puppy toys, then let a dozen or so puppies loose to do puppy stuff.

It sounds spectacularly dumb, even though you get an occasional close-up of a puppy nose through the water-bowl cam. But I'm telling you, if you have even a tiny, shriveled soul, it's irresistible.

For two years now, I've been in a room with a bunch of snack- eating, football-intense people who melted every time we switched to the puppies. Big, tough, macho guys would go "aaaawwww." (Though one of them cried when the Seahawks lost last year, so I'm not sure he counts.)

A periodic highlight comes when a poor guy dressed as a referee, most likely a down-on-his-luck actor with a cruel agent, drops a penalty flag to stop play. Then he cleans up a puppy mess. The road to stardom is paved with indignity.

The thing runs on a three-hour loop, and will air until midnight Sunday. All the while, Animal Planet will be offering encouragement and advice for adopting puppies and kittens. More details and adoption links are available at www.animalplanet.com.

Also online, viewers will be able to pick an MVP - yeah, it means Most Valuable Puppy. What can I say? My early favorites are Larry, Izzie and Bess, but the scouts like Milo because he's been developing good chewing skills recently and could be a player.

Yes, you can adopt the puppies and they show you how.

Check out the youtube video I posted at the top. They show a clip of it. I think it's simply cams in a cute doggie pen set up to look like a football field. I heard that the referee comes out when there is an "accident". I think that's all it is cute cute cute puppies being puppies. Apparently there is a water bowl cam too. HOW CUTE!

Kitties or Prince! I can tell you all it is a complete quandry for me! Although I have a feeling all will be decided as I'll most likely be at a place where it's all Super Bowl.

I don't understand why more gay men aren't into watching sports because it's so clearly homoerotic what with all the patting on the butts and stuff.
