Kazaa Who here is a member of Kazaa? I just joined recently. Recently, I made available a BUNCH of rare Eurythmics songs, only available on nearly impossible to find 12" and 45s. Go get them now! The songs really showcase how experimental and visionary Annie and Dave were!

Moonbeam - I was JUST going to start a thread on Kazaa & WinMX. Kazaa is great for downloading music videos/movies, and you can sometimes find really rare music on it. But I find it takes waaay too long to download songs - I usually use WinMX, but the old version has ceased working, so I downloaded the new version... which is terrible. I'm trying to find a good program for downloading music at the moment - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I'm crushed. I miss my old WinMX. I mean, like, where is the sun?

Kazaa is cool for downloading from multiple sources simultaneosly and resuming downloads HOWEVER when it begins the download it caches a temp file that is the size of the entire complete file even though the download has just started. That can suck up memory.
The new WinMX allows for multiple sources as well, but its resume doesn't work as 100% as Kazaa, BUT unlike Kazaa it only takes up memory for what it has already downloaded, not the ultimate size. No KaZaA for me, thanks--I don't want spyware on my computer.
Currently I use WinMX, but IMHO there's nothing available today that's as good as Napster (RIP) was. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

Not really much you can do Rhonda. The memory it takes up is what the final size will be of the file you're downloading when it's complete, so it's not too much of a major problem. It is though if you have a lot of incomplete downloads that you never plan on resuming. Just check the folder that you're saving the downloaded files to and you'll see the temp files in there. Kazaa was widely publicised when it was uncovered that it installs "spyware" on your PC. Big invasion of privacy, so there was a huge exodus by all people "in the know" away from Kazaa when it was uncovered. Here's a cut and paste description: What is spyware? Spyware is a piece of software that is installed on a person's computer which gathers various data about the users of the infected computer, and passes that information on to others, all with neither the user's knowledge nor permission. The information it gathers from the user will invariably be about his or her websurfing habits, his or her email address, and in some cases, passwords and credit card numbers. Most are considered legal only because they include long, convoluted, dense, and hard-to-read legal disclaimers that their maker knows people will never read. People will unwittingly install these products when they install something else, just like a trojan virus. The most common way to get infested these days is by installing certain of the popular peer-to-peer file-swapping products now on the market. Nearly all of the file-swapping programs now routinely come bundled with so-called adware or spyware--programs that automatically pop up advertisements while people surf the Web or that keep track of where someone surfs, information that can then be sold to marketing companies. Despite growing concerns about this bundled software, usage and downloads of the file-swapping programs are at an all-time high. Is Kazaa a spyware? KaZaa, the popular file-sharing program, installs numerous spyware/malware tag-a-longs, including New.net, Onflow, WebHancer, msbb, TOPtext and CydoorSpyware that manipulate the computer's memory and user/system resources. These apps running in the background without the user's knowledge quite often lead to conflicts, crashes, and general system instability. These apps then go on to steal the user's internet connection's bandwidth to send this information back to it's creators. In many cases, the spyware will download new ads, instructions, and/or updates. People who accept 'terms of service' already distributed with Kazaa's software are already agreeing to let their computers be used without any payment at all. --- To reassure you though - I've heard that Kazaa is no longer spyware (they had to bow to public pressure to remove it).

So THAT'S what that New.net shit was?!! I knew I didn't install it...

Actually I even consider Real Player to be spyware these days. It installs a personal messaging client that you don't seem to be able to turn off. Not very nice. I don't use Real Player at all these days. It is a poorly written mess of an application.

Gator has got to be the most fucking annoying thing on the planet. Adaware won't even get rid of it.
Right now I have a bunch of disco songs half downloaded. So depressing. Maybe I'll try and give WinMX another try. Yesterday I was kinda sick and feeling crappy anyhow. I almost threw my computer out the window. I mean, like, where is the sun?

I use Kazaa and WinMx and I don't seem to have any problem with them. Kazaa seems to go very quickly for me with the downloads, more so than WinMx.
