for those who WORK OUT: BEING SICK How long do you wait before you get back to your normal routine?
I've just had my second terrible cold of the season, can't afford to relapse. But I'm also desperately tired of my body & have an aching need to get my ass back to working out I'm still sniffly, you can still hear the phlegm rolling around in my head but damn, despite being super tired a lot of the time I'm ANTSY Just signed up for another year @ the gym, I wanna put it to use this time So tell me - how long do you wait to workout again once you've been really sick?

Between half a week to a week depending on how sick you were! I do that because i want to heal properly before i go ahead and wear and tear on the equipment or classes etc- unless it's yoga or nothing to strenuous.Sometimes you can get a bit too excited and go back into excercise only to get sick again, only worse...cause I haven't allowed my system to heal a bit more, if you catch my drift. So half a week to a week is reasonable i think No hablo espanol,no!

I really do feel your pain- i am such a sinussy person ...if all the discolored guck is gone THEN you are safe. If it's only a bit of sniffles- you can start off gently i reckon And if you feel you're right, then i say, go the full blow!! No hablo espanol,no!

Cal, <---(I'm a Mother and don't catch shit)...until the fluid dries up, please, stay out of your gym. If your job wants you to stay home away from everyone else, get them to pay you to do so...lol. In the meantime, do something at home with a workout DVD if you feel the strength to. You're still germy... Get well soon, love!

How funny that you posted this. I've been wondering the same thing for weeks.
It totally sucks, I know. I've been sick all winter and I'm still not back into my full routine. And I feel fat and disgusting. I've been giving half assed attempts and then start sneezing and hacking. Plus I can fell that I'm not as limber as usual. BLAH, get well soon.

I shouldn't answer this question for you. I never listen to my body when it comes to these things. I always go back too soon. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

That's not good . You should take care of yourself! I know. Sometimes it's hard to tell though, and when I start back into running after being sick for example, it actually helps speed things up and I feel good afterward. I really never know though, how long is too long or not long enough, since it's different every time. i guess it all depends on how sick i am/was, and what my body is telling me.
sometimes a week's "vacation" from the gym is a good thing, because my body needs a rest and my mind needs a rest from the routine. sometimes, when i'm just starting to recover from a cold or a flu (or whatever has me laid up), the gym is the absolute best thing for me, because all the sweating and stretching and endorphins help push the recovery process along. my advice is, if you're in doubt and you feel like you MIGHT be ready to go back, then go. at the very least, you can walk on the treadmill for a while.

Bad colds never stopped me from hitting the gym. I've always worked out when I'm sick. I never lift heavy, but I try to do something. So don't go by me, because I'm nuts.

I'd say to make the effort to at least try to keep working out as much as you usually do. Your body will let you know as you're trying if you just can't do it that day.
Hope you feel better soon.

I work as a personal trainer so I see this all the time at the gym. Ideally as someone said earlier you have to give your body time to rest. Your immune system is already working overtime so give it time to recover. A good rule of thumb is anything above the neck, you can give your workout a shot. Anything below the neck means that your particular sickness has spread to your respiratory system (ie any colored phlegm discharge) and you need to take it easy. Even after you've fully recovered, you don't want to just jump in at the same intensity in your workout routine. Go light the first couple of days back; maybe some light cardio and stretching and/or weights. But most importantly stay hydrated. Drink water or a sports drink like Gatorade but be sure to read the ingredients label. You want to avoid anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup as a primary ingredient. Sorry for the long response but I hope this helps. [Edited 1/29/07 6:46am] "I ordered no broth! Away with ye lest my cane find your backside!!"- Ralph Wiggum, Actor.

[Edited 1/29/07 6:46am] That's what I've always read too...if it's contained to your head, then you're ok to work out, if not, stay in bed.

Ps. If you have insurance go to the doctor first.
If you have mono or something, you shouldn't be excercising.

If it's not in your chest and just upper respiratory, and your body feels fine, go try and see how it feels. Just listen to your body.
I have lung issues, so I tend to have to wait at least a week or two after having a cold to get back to working out if I want to be able to breathe at the same time. Kinda sucks. oh noes, prince is gonna soo me!!1!

Even if you cant work out or excersise, you can probably still stretch. That way your muscles can stay in some sort of routine, making it an easier transition when you get back to the grind. A happy face, A Thumpin Bass, For A Lovin' Race. PEACE.

I went to the gym yesterday for 2 hours hoping to sweat it out. It didn't work. As long as I'm not feeling light headed or nausea I still try to go. Just be sure to wipe everything down so you don't spread your germs.

Thanks you guys The weird thing is, like someone said, sometimes it seems like working out & sweating (or just acting like you're not sick in general, really) helps you feel better faster. I've had it happen before, but since I'm sick for a second time I just don't wanna take a chance & relapse - I don't get sick time & have already lost days off my paycheck
Never read the above/below the neck thing before, thanks for that I think I'll give it a shot this weekend - ease back into it & take it slow. But dammit the holidays were NOT my friend! That 10-15 lbs I wanted to lose has turned into... something else

Coming from an expert on the subject.
The best you can do is "stretch" and adjust your diet a bit. Get plenty of rest before you start again.

Oh man, I've been sick for the last few days, and I just haven't had the energy to work out! I think i may force myself to today, because I don't want to get too comfortable with not working out. Wanna hear me sing? www.ChampagneHoneybee.com
