Question about wines.

What's the best way to store wine? I don't really drink but was given a bottle for my b-day. And once it's opened, how long til it goes bad? It's a white wine so what foods complement it?

I like white wine with a bit of a chill on it, so I put it in the fridge about 30 minutes before serving it. Otherwise it rests on a wine rack.

After it's opened (today, Wednesday, eg.) what's left-overs by Saturday gets poured out. shrug

Happy birthday. smile

It depends upon the wine. If it's your average table wine, it really doesn't matter IMHO, since it won't age well, and you'll want to drink it soon.

OTOH, if it's something worth storing for a few months or years, then it should be kept a wine cellar or similar environment. You want some place that's dark, with at least 50% humidity (but not too much), and relatively cool (45 to 65 degrees F... avoiding rapid temperature changes is more important than the actual number).

I use our storage unit in the basement of our building. It's probably not ideal, but the best option I have, other than paying to use an off-site wine cellar.

And once it's opened, how long til it goes bad?

Within a few days. You can get stoppers that slow the process, but once you've opened the bottle, you want to finish it soon.

The classic rule is that white wines go with fish or white meat, but these days it's okay to break the "rules." With that said, here are some tips about wine and food pairing. Note that you'll want to know more about the particular white wine in question.

You can keep white wine open for longer than red, since you can keep white in the fridge.

I wouldn't drink open red after a bout 2-3 days, though.

But even if you don't drink the open white right away, you could always cook with it.

This thread is something of a coincidence... I paid a visit to my wine guy this evening, and he had this in stock:

It seems as if a new vintage (2000) of Cristal champagne was recently released. My wine guy received this first (and so far, only) bottle from his distributor just a few days ago.

Edit: Sorry about the two accidental blank posts above. For some reason, I'm unable to remove them. I've submitted a bug report, so hopefully we'll get this fixed soon.

lol

There's actually a section signed "Economy" at the store where I buy wine... they should be able to provide you with just about any boxed wine you desire.

Tsss tsss tsss... Marion, one day in your life, i hope you'll have the chance to try a Château D'Yquem. Absolutely fucking expensive french white wine, but with a savour simply unique.
