Man who stabbed George Harrison discharged from clinic

http://story.news.yahoo.c...2&ncid=762
LONDON (Reuters) - A schizophrenic man who broke into the house of former Beatle George Harrison and attacked him with a knife three years ago was discharged from a secure British mental hospital on Thursday.

Michael Abram had been found not guilty by reason of insanity after breaking into Harrison's house in 1999 and repeatedly stabbing him and attacking his wife Olivia. He was confined to the Scott Clinic secure mental hospital outside Liverpool.

"Michael Abram, Scott Clinic patient, has been given a conditional discharge today by a mental health review tribunal," the Mersey Care National Health Service Trust, which runs the clinic, said in a statement.

"In this case, the tribunal has given a conditional discharge. The conditions, which remain confidential, are to ensure the safety of the public."

Harrison survived the stabbing but died last November of cancer.

Abram's lawyer, Peter Edwards, told Reuters Abram had responded to drug treatment for his schizophrenia and had been symptom-free for two years.

"That's the great tragedy of Michael Abram's case," he said. "He had spent many years going to hospitals and doctors seeking treatment for his mental illness, and been rebuffed.

"If they had done their jobs properly, Mr. Harrison and Mrs. Harrison would never have been attacked," the lawyer said.

A spokeswoman for the trust said it would take a few days for Abram to be released, and that he would continue to live in a "structured care environment."

It's really sad that George went thru that..and doubly sad that the guy was schizophrenic and had asked 4 help and didnt get it. It's reminiscent of that woman who killed her 5 children but had been asking 4 help b4 it happened. If he'd gotten medicine it would never have happened 2 George and Olivia. sigh My 2 cents.

WTF?

Now obviously, since u r not nor ever have been mentally ill, u could not describe 2 us what it's like. U could not 4 example, distinguish between being crazy and being dumb. Crazy people aren't necessarily dumb. They can become obsessed with people and memorize their address and plot 2 kill this person.

But just because they pre-meditated it does not mean they were in a stable mental state when it happened.

I am a big admirer of George, needless 2 say, and his words have struck a chord with me...yet even I can have compassion 4 some1 like Michael Abram.

It is much easier 2 4give than 2 hold grudges, IMO. I don't want 2 b presumptuous, but I'm sure even George let it pass...and his son even witnessed the whole incident, which is very sad. sad

And u would never believe the amount of blindness 2 negativity that exists on Beatle boards. People who frequent Beatle boards will not even speak Mark David Chapman's name, and they've just added this guy 2 the list. In fact, moderators usually ask the posters 2 "clean up" their post if these names r mentioned.

I think it's all quite petty and infantile. It's just a name, the person behind might b an entirely different matter.

Anywho....
