Go to a wine store and talk to the staff.See if they have wine tastings. Explain your likes and they'll direct you. Stag's Leap, Silver Oak are great cabs but a bit pricey. There's good less expensive reds from Oregon, Australia, South Africa. Even Italilan wines can be inexpensive and good. Depends on what you're eating and how heavy you want the wine.

Terre di Gioia is also really good. It has a real slight taste of dark cherry to it, but it's not one of those fruit juice wines at all. The bottle looks kind of fem too, but if you can get past that, it's a nice tasting wine.

I work on wines sometimes and I cannot reccomend any of it. I do not know the difference between a pinot grigio or a merlot.
