The 23 Enigma

Late author William Burroughs was so gripped by numeric coincidences surrounding 23, he kept a scrapbook of his findings. He was alerted to the number's power when a Captain Clark told him he had run a ferry from Spain to Morocco with no problem for 23 years. Hours later it sank, killing the skipper. Later that very same day, he heard a radio report of a flight 23 which had crashed in the US - operated by a Captain Clark...

Writer Burroughs inspired author Robert Anton Wilson. It was from one of his books that the 23-letter name, 'Justified Ancients Of Mu Mu', was taken for the band which later became KLF. A US police car used in the video for the group's hit 'Doctorin' The Tardis' had 23 painted on the roof, and their final performance lasted 23 minutes. They incinerated £1million on a Scottish island on August 23, 1994.

William Burroughs' final tv appearance was in U2's Last Night on Earth video. The letter U is the 21st in the alphabet and adding the 2 gives...23.

Psychic TV were so obsessed with 23 that at one point they made the Guinness Book of World Records by releasing 23 albums on the 23rd day over a period of 23 months. They were influenced by the occultist Aleister Crowley who had been convinced of the power of 23. Lead singer Genesis P. Orridge told the members of another English band 'Cabaret Voltaire' about the 23 enigma. They showed some amused interest, but mainly skepticism. Two days later, Genesis received an exasperated phone call from them:

"You bastard!" ....We've come to Holland to do three gigs, and in every fucking hotel we've had room 23, and the gig on the 23rd was a complete disaster. Everywhere we turn there are 23's - what the hell have you done?"

"Well, I did say you'd start noticing it!", quipped Genesis.

The 'Devil horns' and 'V sign' both involve 2 upright fingers and 3 folded down. V itself feeds back into the Law of Fives as it is the Latin numeral for 5.

W, the 23rd letter of the Latin alphabet has 2 points down, 3 points up.

On a normal modern Latin alphabet 'QWERTY' keyboard, the 23rd letter W is right below and between 2 & 3.

William Shakespeare was born and died on April 23. His first folio of plays came in 1623. His wife Anne died in 1623.

US catchphrase "23, skidoo" is thought to have come from 'A Tale of Two Cities' by Dickens. In it, a woman counts guillotine victims, as she says "23" the hero ('Sydney Carton') is beheaded in the last act. He is the 23rd person to be executed.

The progressive rock band, TooL, named the last track on their latest album, 10,000 Days, 'Viginti Tres' - Latin for twenty-three. They also originally intended the Lateralus songs "Disposition", "Reflection", and "Triad" to be a trilogy of songs played out as a single 23 minute track. They are performed together live. The back of the CD's outer sleeve is designed to resemble a circuit diagram; these three songs are "linked" by printed lines and small circles as if they are part of a parallel circuit.

In the song "Gett Off", the lyrics read: "Gett Off...23 positions in a one-night stand...."

Car giant Nissan is touched by a numerical coincidence. In Japanese, "ni" is 2, and "san" is 3. So Nissan would be 23.

The first Morse Code transmission ("What hath God wrought?") was from a bible passage, numbers 23:23

The Knights Templar had 23 Grand Masters of their Order.

The 9/11 terror attacks in 2001? 9+11+2+0+0+1 =23

In season one of the show Lost, Jack sat in 23b, Rose sat in 23d, Bernard sat in 23e, and Kate has a bounty on her head of $23,000...

Actor River Phoenix was born on August 23 1970, he died age 23.

The planecrash that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, The Big Bopper, occured on February 3 (2/3) 1959

Sesame Street's Bert is a member of the national association of W lovers, the 23rd letter of the alphabet.

When 23 or more people are in the same room there is a better than evens chance that at least two share the same birthday. Class sizes in schools are larger than 23, so more than half in Britain have two pupils with the same birthdays.

The Latin alphabet has 23 letters.

On average, every 23rd wave crashing to shore is twice as large as normal.

In the disaster movie Airport, the bomber has seat 23.

The Enola Gay dropped "Little Boy" over the center of Hiroshima at 8:15 8+15 =23 "Little Boy" contained 'Uranium 23-5'. 23-5 =19 / 19+5 =23.

The human biorhythm is generally 23 days.

It takes 23 seconds for blood to circulate through the body.

The average person breathes about 23,000 times a day.

Parents each contribute 23 chromosomes, to start a new human life during reproduction.

In the Beatles film 'Yellow Submarine', The Butterfly Stomper, who destroys all things of beauty, wears a shirt with the number 23.

The first song on Side A of the Beatles first album took 23 takes to record.

On July 23, 1996 the "Mysterious Eyes" of comet Hale-Bopp were first sighted.

The Earth rotates on an axis of 23.4 degrees. Alright, that's not strictly 23, but it's near enough to be considered a numerical coincidence.

Rock star Kurt Cobain was born in 1967 and died in 1994. Both years bizarrely add up to 23 if counted as individual digits: 1+9+6+7 =23. 1+9+9+4 =23.

Roman Emperor Julius Caesar was stabbed 23 times when he was assassinated.

The average smoker gets through 23 cigarettes a day.

23 was the shirt number worn by tragic footballer Marc-Vivien Foe when he was at Manchester City. The Cameroon international died after collapsing on the pitch during a Confederations Cup semi-final.

In the film Die Hard III the train derails in subway station 23.

American Cavalry legend General Custer was promoted to the senior military rank at the age of 23. The soldier was the youngest general in the US army at the time.

In the final assault on the Death Star in Star Wars, Luke Skywalker is in Red 5. Red 2 and Red 3 start bomb runs at 23 degrees. The cell block holding Princess Leia, right, was AA-23.

The German movie '23' explored an obsession with the number, based on a real-life story.

Jim Carey's new movie is called 'The Number 23'... (see trailer below)

I have a problem with 333.

I used to wake up ever other night or so at 333 am.
I would look up from my computer at work at 333 pm.

I used to get change back from cashiers that totalled 333.

The list goes on and on and on.

333 seems to be my number.

Burroughs w/ Jimmy Page. razz

It's so weird that all of this would be brought up right now. I just finished reading a book about secret societies, which covered of course the Freemasons, The Knights Templar, the Order of the Golden Dawn, and Aleister Crowley. Then just two days ago someone sent me a link to a documentary about Crowley as well.

It's crazy how all these things are connected. nod

Maybe I'll have to ask Number23 more about it though since I'm no expert on the subject. razz

There's eight planes or dimentions perceiveable by us in our earthly forms which are accessable through extreme forms of tantric meditation or even torture - or if that doesn't appeal, jump on the back of the most common method of attaining higher (or lower) states of conciousness, the use of so-called 'psychadelics' which have been responsible in every human society spawned from Adam's ballsack for the all the evolutionary growth of conciousness in our brains. You owe your awareness of yourself and your surroundings to fungus. Really. And we went to the moon. Thanks to fungus and natural selection. The number 23 is commonly exerienced on what is usually referred to by mystics, gurus and shamans as the sixth dimentional layer - also where the pookah play, the cosmic jokers and puppet masters. but we are them and they are us for all was one before the Big Inflation and all will become one again. Everything is connected by strings folded up in the dimentions ffolded and hidden t the quantum level of existance, all the possibilities to what we can perceive as 'reality' and, by the way, [i]everything[/] is alive.

I believe it. nod I really do.

And I've had my share of psychedelics that's for sure. lol I didn't get to go to the moon though. wink At least not in a physical sense. razz

Seriously though, I've really taken an interest in this subject recently. I plan on reading a lot more about it soon. nod
