I saw this in theaters. And yes, it's terrifying. As a kid, my childhood was a lot like the kids' in this film--my folks were total Evangelical fanatics. The scene where the kids were instructed to talk to the cardboard standup of George W. Bush was sooooo uncomfortable.

Why is it frightening?

The 3 previews I watched didn't seem bad.

i wish a movie would come out that seriously DID scare me. i'm thinking of checking out those SAW movies, but i get the idea they'll just gross me out more than anything else.
