god, i hope not. meryl was good in that movie, but she's good in everything and it wasn't that great of a film so it wasn't difficult for her to stand out in it. helen mirren was just freakin' fantastic in 'the queen', meanwhile. her presence in that role was enormous.

mirren is the shoo-in win this year.

i wish i could agree with you but history has proven otherwise. there are just way too many horny old white men on the academy. if you ask me, i think thats partly the reason why dreamgirls didn't make the final cut. (a lack for some to connect to the film).

in the past, with Sissy Spacek and Lauren Bacall, we had shoo-in older women who saw themselves defeated by up and coming "hot thangs". we all shouldn't be shocked if Penelope Cruz ends up walking away with the award. Or Kate Winslett.

it will probably invite fighting, but i am gonna go ahead and say it:

there are a LOT of black folk nominated this year, and it looks like we are going to have 3 black winners out of 4 acting awards.

WOW!

clapping

considering how whitecentric oscar has been in the past, i am really happy to see that change.

nod There's definitely more diversity in this year's list. This also shows (to me anyway) that more "Oscar worthy" roles are being made available to people of color. It's great!

agreed.

but i doubt Murphy will win. Dreamgirls really showed how much its lacking support amoungst the Academy. And Murphy (like Bill Murray) isn't very liked. I think the SAGs award will show if Murphy will win or not.

But I do think Hudson and Forrest will win.

Why can't it be that they just didn't think it was one of the best films of the year? I think I've been championing this film more than anyone else here (for a couple of years now lol), and as much as I loved it I didn't even think it was one of the year's best. There were great things about it, but other films were much better.

In short notice:

Angelina Jolie - Supporting Actress in The Good Shepherd?
Matt Damon - Best actor in both The Good Shepherd and The Departed?
Best film - The Good Shepherd?

Why not?
sad

yea, i liked it but was dissapointed by it. i didn't think it was best picture worthy. i really feel like the film failed the brillaint performances of it's actors by not matching them.

I would have expected Matt Damon's name to have appeared somewhere....did "The Good Shepherd" come out too late for the nominations or something?

exactly. why was Matt snubbed? He should get his due granted he already has an oscar for his screenplay skills, but he definitely deserves one for his acting....nod

why? three words: lil miss sunshine

sorry, it just strikes me as odd that this film is getting all this hoopla...it was a sitcom for christ sakes. lol ...however, i can see why a bunch of ole white men would connect to that film more so then they would dreamgirls. and i also understand that lil miss sunshine is much easier to watch on a tv screen...thus it getting the edge.

and please note i never said one film was better then the other...im just pointing out the obvious advantages sunshine had when it came to receiving its nod.

but, in my opinion, and it sounds like a lot of others, as well, lms is a much better film than dg

i dont think it has anything to do with race, especially since dg leads with MOST nominations.

im not saying racism is a factor...i am saying how one "connects" to a film is a factor...folks, theres a difference.

and one thing to consider, the best picture is the only category nominated by the academy members at large. the other awards (costume, sound, cinematography) are all voted on by their perspective peers. i honestly think at the end of the day, them old white men folk connected to Lil Miss Sunshine more...and it ran a better pre-oscar campaign...cause IMHO both films were not the great. lol

I'd buy your argument if these were the only awards Little Miss Sunshine got, but it's been pretty heavily praised thus far. It certainly sounds like you didn't like it.

well, I haven't seen Dreamgirls yet, but it seems that Little miss Sunshine's tone and subject matter is more cutting edge, or "new", punk, subversive, (or is that prograssive?) so that might weigh in on some people's opinions.

not at all...it was good...just like dreamgirls was good...but to be honest, neither deserve to win best picture...but, because of the phenomenal acting and momentum one has to be surprised at the snub. everyone thought this was the film that was going to actually win best picture...and not not even get nominated, well...i think it merits thought. especially when the rest of the oscar lineup was pretty predictable. well, except for prince being snubbed. lol

not i. my bet is still on babel to win. maybe the departed. i would have been extremely upset and somewhat pissed had dreamgirls won picture.

In advance to secure that nobody else would. It's the equivalent of waiting in line for Star Wars tix weeks before the movie starts.
