year after year after year...talk about overrated...

and little miss sunshine is overrated too, and so is babel, i guess
last years was just not very good for films...sigh

I won´t bother watching the damn oscars this year...(am i sounding
a little pissed or what neutral )

shrug I think Clint's a great director. One of the best. I never really liked him as an actor, but I love the films he's helmed.

That'd be 4 - 2 for film, 2 for director (Million Dollar Baby and Unforgiven).

so, he himself has won 2. they give the best picture awards to the producers of the winning film, but the film itself won.

which is sort of 4, i guess. i never think of it as the producers winning best picture.

you've got a really good point - 'national lampoon's vacation' was a bittersweet meditation on family with a realistic portrayal of lower middle class doldrums and a twee indie rock soundtrack.

i also think 'i heart huckabees' was nothing more than a souped-up 'van wilder'.

those characters were written soo broad no way in hell you can consider them realistic...they were just as cartoonish as the Vacation characters. but hey, nice use of sarcasm. thumbs up!

So Prince didn't get nominated for one...I am a bit surprised, although I don't think Song of the Heart is Oscar worthy. Is it because "the Academy" was worried he'd win simply because he's Prince, or does this indicate that all the Hollywood schmoozing didn't really pay off, or am I reading entirely too much into the whole thing? Probably the latter. lol (btw, Marilyn Monroe won a Golden Globe but was never nominated for an Oscar. geek)

But three songs from Dreamgirls? That seems like a lot.

it will probably invite fighting, but i am gonna go ahead and say it:

there are a LOT of black folk nominated this year, and it looks like we are going to have 3 black winners out of 4 acting awards.

WOW!

clapping

considering how whitecentric oscar has been in the past, i am really happy to see that change.

oh how funny...i just posted a big ole thing on the golden globes in the prince forum...let me repost here...

{re prince oscar snub and golden globe win} not really. the globes got a history of that...i laugh when folks give the globes more credibility then they should...like using madonna's globe when for Evita as proof she is a talented actress...

the globes are a joke. you got like fifty "foreign press" choosing the winners and nominees. hence off the wall shit happening...the only reason why its such a big deal is because the awards serve alcohol during the ceremony and stars would have so much fun they would go year after year...then crazy stuff started happening during the show (cause everyone was drunk) and so the show started being aired on tbs, then went from tbs to nbc and they are now a hit.

biggest golden globe joke of all: Katherine Hepburn never won one for her films.

eek

I know Madonna is, but is Pia primarily considered a singer? 'Cause I can see that Madonna wouldn't get an Oscar--she's a 'musician.' Marilyn was actually nominated for a couple Golden Globes. Not saying she was a brilliant actress throughout her career, but she was great in The Misfits.

Pia and her husband pretty much lobbied the before mentioned "foreign press" members for a golden globe award. and she won it. this despite her obviously lacking any acting skills.

sharon stone did the same thing a couple years ago for Casino. she bought all the press members watches and personally delivered to them.

who are these foreign press folks? they arent film critics...they arent actors are trained in filmmaking. nobody really knows what you have to do to be a member. yet talk about madonna's acting and you will surely get folks referencing it as proof of her acting chops.

Well I'm admittedly biased (Marilyn was my first obsession before I discovered Prince) so I think she actually wasn't a bad actress. Definitely better than Madonna! (Can't speak on Pia.) But as a singer--not so much. She won the Golden Globe for The Prince & The Showgirl, which I've only seen once. imo, she was much better in The Misfits or even Some Like It Hot. Was she Oscar-worthy? Maybe of a nomination...I don't know, I'd have to see the what other films were out those years.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I realize the GG are a bit of a joke, but please don't lump Marilyn into the Madonna/Pia pile of talentless people who won one. smile

(Sorry for the OT....I'm going now, I'm really late for work! Damn you Org!)

god, i hope not. meryl was good in that movie, but she's good in everything and it wasn't that great of a film so it wasn't difficult for her to stand out in it. helen mirren was just freakin' fantastic in 'the queen', meanwhile. her presence in that role was enormous.

well, the only reason i give credibility to the oscars and to the SAGS is because they are voted on by their actual peers. but yes, politics do come in to play with both...but no where near as obscene as some of the other award shows (like the ggs.)
