TODAY: most miserable day of the year.

At least it can only get better! yay!

Blue Monday: Most miserable day of the year!
FEELING miserable today? No wonder - for January 22 is the most miserable day of the year, a psychologist and `happiness expert' says.

Dr Cliff Arnall, from Cardiff University, came up with an equation to calculate `Blue Monday' after taking into account bad weather, Christmas debts and broken New Year's resolutions.

If that wasn't bad enough, a survey for Standard Life Bank ranks people in Greater Manchester as being among the least positive in the country.

The Samaritans are backing a campaign to `Beat Blue Monday', by encouraging people to ask for help before their problems escalate.

Samaritans spokeswoman Kate Redway said: "Sadly, one in five people in Britain experience depression and this time of year can be particularly difficult, with people in debt after Christmas and finding it hard to settle back into a work routine during dark days. Blue Monday is a chance for people to reach out for help rather than bottling things up."

And people could have been cheered up today by a sunny day and breakfast in bed, a survey for the Home-Grown Cereals Authority says.

Nearly nine out of 10 Britons wake up in a bad mood because of lack of sleep, oversleeping and worries about the rush hour commute.

More than half of those questioned said not getting enough sleep put them in a foul temper in the morning.

Stress

Three in 10 blamed their bad moods on oversleeping, 25 per cent their trip to work, 17 per cent missing the bus or train, 17 per cent thinking about work and 15 per cent running out of milk or toast.

Families with children were more likely to find mornings stressful, with women bearing the brunt of the strain.

More than a quarter of women said tidying up after everyone else put them in a bad mood, while 14 per cent blamed their children's behaviour and 10 per cent blamed their partner's behaviour.

By contrast, men were less likely to blame their families for their early morning blues, but 27 per cent said traffic jams put them in a foul temper.

Most likely to lift the spirits of Britons is the weather, with 29 per cent of those interviewed saying a nice day would cheer them up.

A quarter said they felt better after listening to a favourite CD or radio station and 23 per cent after having a cup of tea or breakfast in bed.

Women's top choices of mood lifters were nice weather, a cup of tea or breakfast in bed, a message from a friend and no arguments.

Top for men were nice weather, a bacon sandwich, listening to their favourite CD or radio station . . . and a cup of tea or breakfast in bed.

The survey found 14 per cent of adults do not eat breakfast, with 35-to-44-year-olds and divorcees least likely to start the day with a meal.

A total of 2,109 adults took part in the survey.
