He's an incedible actor.
It's because of his performance in Titanic that I've developed a lifelong hatred of icebergs. BTW, I said this to Mel Gibson once (ran into him at a Quizno's. Nice guy). He said that's why he hated jews. I tol' him, "No, Mel....I said 'icebergs'." He said, "Icebergs, Goldbergs...same thing."

But aside from Gilbert Grape (which is where his rep comes from) I haven't much liked him in anything. He's just ok. I think for heartthrobs Marky Mark & Depp are better & more believable & have more charisma.
But Leo's better that Brad Pitt, at least. i actually think brad pitt is really good in fight club babel interview with a vampire 12 monkeys You and I seem to share a number of similar opinions. I would add Kalifornia to your Pitt list as well. It seems this movie gets a mixed reaction generally speaking, but Pitt's role in this film was one which earned his acting ability more respect in my book.

And like origmnd, I would add Basketball Diaries to the list. I was so annoyed when he got all mainstream after Titanic. (The same thing kinda happened for me with Johnny Depp & Pirates, too. I don't like it when something/one is too popular. ) The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

considering that he acts with as much talent as seen in a typical high school play, he should have stuck with that idea.

leo still looks like a kid. i thought he was terribly miscast in 'the aviator', and it's a stretch to see him playing any of the manly-man leading role butch characters he's done since titanic. i think he's a good actor, but i also think gilbert grape and titanic have been the only movies he really 'belonged' in. maybe romeo & juliet...

What's Eating Gilbert Grape was the only time I thought he was great. I loved that movie to bits. He was always too pubescent looking for me to find him a cute piece of meat. Even now he looks bloated and pubescent.

Leo's performance in What's Eating Gilbert Grape was stellar, and outshone all of the other actors. As much as I adore Johnny, I felt like he was just sort of playing himself. Leo, on the other hand, really dove into the role, and was so real and endearing. What a great movie. Still can't watch it without crying though... Wanna hear me sing? www.ChampagneHoneybee.com

That was fantastic! I actually watched that Ed Wood film he was making at the eend, and it is terrible. In a good way. One of his most memorable (yet brief) performances was in Before Night Falls. He played a drag queen named Bon Bon, who smuggled an author's book out of jail (a few pages at a time) with his butt. Wanna hear me sing? www.ChampagneHoneybee.com

"ed wood" made a big ed wood fan out of me. i have them all on dvd a friend of mine back when we were young had never seen "ed wood" so i showed it to him. he couldn't believe "plan 9" was THAT bad, so i showed it to him. he then said that it wasn't THAT bad, that we could make a worse movie, so we did. it's fun to make intentionally bad movies. we had a blast, and came up with lots of funny in jokes that are in our movie, and lots of nods to other bad sci-fi. my friend actually took it up to tthe college he attended and ended up running the video numerous times that day in the student lounge, cause people were calling their friends and saying "you gotta come see this." we ended up doing two sequals to it, each worse than the last. good times... He's very attractive imo & I can see how someone who's serious about their craft can be annoyed w/ the whole teen mag sensation bullshit. I loved him in B-ball Diaries, Gilbert Grape, Romeo & Juliet, The Depaaahted...
Just watched The Aviator today, that movie was pretty shitty BUT I still liked him (though I thought he was miscast). Never saw the Beach, Titanic was shit (in terms of requiring any acting skill), have yet to see Blood Diamond but I'd like to. I dig him, he just needs to stay away from stupid shit...
