I guess I'm just a bad person

Everyone is harping about the diamond studded car, but I myself would like to own an SL600 someday.

Not with all of the tacky bling all over it.

Is it bad that I want a car like that? I would get it because I earned it. What's wrong with that? neutral

No really, I guess maybe I'm not a good person. Since I was young, I've always wanted to be in real estate and drive an SL600.

Shallow for sure, but I can't help myself.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that at all.. It's not bad to have money or to spend it on yourself. It's okay to have nice things.
It's also good to share and give to charities, but people don't have to pretend to be poor to be good people.

I wouldn't mind a style of car like that (without all the flashy stuff), but reality has this hold on me that says "Todd, you can't even afford the insurance on a car like that! What the fuck are you thinking???" And then I wake up. smile

I was reading the other thread, and you and a few were saying that being rich was something to feel bad about, and instead of spending money on material things, people should focus on giving and helping the poor.

Very simplified version of what you all were saying, I'll admit. That's the general feeling I got from the conversations though.

No, that wasn't me.

I'm trying to figure out why I need to have a car like that. I don't have self esteem issues really, I didn't grow up disadvantaged, and I have no need to "keep up with the Jones'".

What do you think?

REDFEATHERS

I dont think its a bad thing..

I have some gorgeous possessions (IMO lol) but they are cherished and I am thankful that I was able to work hard and earn it.. so they will always be precious to me.. I have also many things that are of no value at all, and are still as precious to me..

It opens up the whole debate of what you have and how precious is it to you?

For eexample, I have friends who have their own car.. those who personally saved up and bought their car, really look after it..

and I have friends whose parents buy their kids a car.. many a time they really dont give a fuck and its crashed within a year

Now I am only making an example.. dont quote or take what I have said to heart but I think there is something about earning ones things and getting a free ride..

I am not poor and right now I am not necessarily good people but I do feel the need to give. I do not feel bad that I have money nor do I want anyone else to feel that way. My opinion is just that we should take care of each other better.

Now, material things don't mean that much to me. I drive a Focus and I am just grateful to have a car but coming from nothing, and I do mean living in poverty, I just can't wrap my mind around spending that much money for a car. People do what they want and always have. I am not hating on anyone for it.

No biggie... Time for a change of venue. I havent as yet decided what aspect of real estate I am interested in but look to take the final exam in the the next 6 weeks and getting my feet wet... The market has grinded to a hault as it were so I have a few years to configure what I angle I am interested in...

As for the car, I have always liked the line. It is an amazing performer for the buck and am already in a field where the vehicle is common place. I just chose to place my extra money into travel and the like in the past while.

Excellent!!! I am in the same boat. I am going to talk to someone at CashinCompany next week, but for now I might just stay in property management until the market picks up, which it will because it is always cyclical.

I see you doing very well once you get past the dreaded first 18 months. wink

Nothing at all wrong with wanting a mercedes. The vehicles drive well and are very safe, especially if you have alot of distance to cover in your career.. Keep in mind the maintenance will be more expensive.
We have image cars in our household but I prefer to drive my toyota Corona '81. I don't worry about parking at the grocery store or work. I don't want to fuss about the car getting dinged. Some people are inconsiderate and think nothing of swinging the car door wide open and knicking the next car.

It depends on what you consider excessive and whether you feel ok about owning it. I'm not particularly interested in having a very expensive car, but that's just me. Nearly everyone appreciates having some nice things, especially when you know you've worked hard to get them. Certain small possessions like books, my mp3 player and my praa pendant make me happier for having them, but I'm definitely an experiences over things kinda guy. I would say, similar to what stymie spoke about, having lived here in Thailand the last few years, living where I am and with the people I'm with, I doubt I'd ever drop big money on a car or something equally lavish as I'm all too aware of what else could be done with the money. I may previously have thought differently to this, but now it would feel unnecessary and irresponsible when I think about things like food, bills, having a roof over your head that I no longer even take for granted, even when things are going well. I would love to have more money because I now know exactly where I would put it, and no dream of a Mercedes could make me want for this money more than just wanting to give people around me a better life day to day. I already know I'll never have enough money for a Merc for feeling this way and already doing it. It's ok.

I think it's more that the Mercedes in the other thread is completely encrusted in diamonds and was the Prince's 38th car...that seems a bit over the top considering that a lot of people in Saudi Arabia maybe cannot even afford one car.

As long as you can afford it, you should get whatever type of car you desire.
