I think Tom Hanks is a much better actor than Denzel because of the variety and depth of his roles.

for example, what other actor could pull off "Castaway" where you are on an Island alone and keep your attention for over an hour in a movie.

Denzel stands out so much because he is the only great black actor we have and he looks good(like me). Morgan Freeman is close, but not on his level yet.

Who do you think is the better of the two and why?

They are pretty close... Denzel Washington is capable of some fine performances, but Tom Hanks is a bit better.

Tom Hanks is pretty good, but dang Denzel is also good and not to mention good to look at! Of course like Chronic..

Even though I am going to the same acting conservatory as Denzel, I would have to say Tom Hanks. He has a comedy background which means he has more range. In my opinion...which may not mean much really

Tom Hanks, obviously. Between Denzel and Morgan Freeman it's probably Denzel although i personally prefer Freeman's less-is-more approach.

if have to go with Denzel. He has a more subtle refined approach to acting. Hanks has admitted that he didnt start *acting* until A League of There Own...He mainly played off his killer charisma till then...

I love em both...expecially in Philidelphia...(sic?)...anyhoo, Hanks has also gone on record saying that he felt Denzel's performance was much more vital to the success of the film and made his own performance possible...

I always thought Hanks was somewhat overrated.

Don't appreciate much by either of them. They don't act. They show up and act like Tom Hanks or Denzel Washington in every movie they're in. Same for Julia Roberts. Hell, I can do that...

Clint Eastwood is the best of all time. Denzel is more versatile than Hanks IMHO

Forrest Gump ALONE wins him that prize...a very hard role 2 play, and Denzel usually plays roles that dont vary that much.

Denzel is good 2. He was good in the Pelican Brief.
