Can Dogs Be Depressed?

For all the orgers who have dogs do you know if they can get depressed? I've had my Chow puppy for a week now and I think he's depressed sad He started out fine and playful, now he won't eat and all he does is sleeps. I know the sleeping thing is normal for puppies, but the eating part is starting to worry me now. What should I do?

How old is he??

The puppy probably misses it's mother or it needs to be seen by a vet.

Puppies,like babies, sleep a lot.

All animals can get depressed, but it's often difficult to say if that's what's causing their behaviour or if it's something physical. Take him to the vet to make sure.

Of course they can!

They react emotionally to situations, environments, and sometimes it might be brain chemistry, as in humans.

sad Poor doggie! Take him to the vet.

He's 9 weeks old and very adorable. He's had his first shots, but all he wants to do is drink water. I asked his parents owner what type of food he was originally eating and purchased that food and some other treats and goodies, but he still seems depressed sad

Oh come on, you're a nurse aren't you? Taking him to the vet can't be a big deal. And if he's healthy, then he's probably just behaving like this because he's adjusting. Imagine if someone threw you into a new family when you were a kid and expected you to be fine with it already after a week? He ptobably just needs time.

Sure I'm a nurse-It's my first puppy! I really got him for my son. I know that he needs time to adjust, but I'm still worried. Taking him to a vet is no problem I just don't want to do anything that may cause him more stress smile

I think they can, but because he's young and not eating well, he needs to go to the vet right away. Could be as simple as worms, but he should be seen.

Yeah, except it's not normal for a puppy to not eat. I'm gonna forgive you for your sketchy advice-giving, though, because I like you. nod

It's normal to not eat if you're depressed! That goes for animals too. Either way I told her in my first post to take the dog to the vet regardless. The comment about needing time was to calm her down and realize that it might well be something that will pass by itself after a while, so no need to worry.

I've had lots of puppies. None of them would never not eat. My yellow lab is 7 months old now. He gets sad every day when my husband and kids are gone, and he's only here with boring ol' me, who yells at him all the time to get things out of his mouth. He will walk around, whining, then plop down and just look bored.

But if I were to open a bag of chips or do anything in the kitchen really, he will perk right up. He' so happy to eat in the morning, that he knocks stuff down with the insane wagging of his thick tail.

I guess it depends on what type of dog you have. My Labs would eat until their stomachs burst probably. They are insatiable. But my Beagle will only eat until she's full, then that's it, leaving the rest of her food for our 10 year old Lab to inhale.

Who wants to pay for high vet bills if you don't have to? Research your dog's breed and see what it says about their appetite.

Nurse please take little one 2 the vet ASAP they can go down hill ever so quick. If your not overtly concerned you could try and attempt to get him 2 eat with steamed chicken or fish and boiled rice (over cook the rice) but very small amounts through the day, if he won’t drink tempt him with an ice cube, but personally I would have him right down the vets. hug

If he's only 9 weeks old, he should be a lot more active, chewing everything in your house up. Usually it's the other way around, you can't get them to calm down.

Like the other posters said, take your pup to the vet asap. It could be a sign he's not feeling well or sick from something.

I know that baby animals do go through an adjustment when leaving their families to go live with adopted ones. He may be depressed about that. But, might be a good idea to call the vet and see what they say...if they recommend bringing him in, I'd do so.
