9/11 Fatigue : I blame the media

I don't know about you, but it's not even the big day yet, and I don't think I can watch another special on 9/11. I've already seen a bunch of documentaries, some terrific, some predictable, etc. I've got the firemen's perspective, the survivors' accounts, the journalists' POW, the cops' testimonies, the prez's reaction, etc..

It's all well-intentioned, but unfortunately, there is just TOO MUCH. The media is actually dulling my senses, making me feel and remember less vividly as each network seems to compete for my sense of grief.

Perverse...

It also pains me to take part in anything that is being used as a springboard to promote a war. I forgive this aspect in memory of the victims, but let me tell ya it doesn't feel good... I really don't think Bush needed to use the momentum of the anniversary for that. If he has such damning proofs that Saddam should be attacked, they would be just as convincing one month from now.

All in all, it does not turn out to be a very dignified anniversary IMO.

Again, I have to agree with you 100%!

Regarding the media, it was sickening that here in Detroit, WRIF played their morining show from last year on 9/11, or so I heard. What was the point? To me, that was too much of a reminder and if they wanted to talk about it, replaying the show was not the way to go about it.

Trust me when I say I fully expected it. I have to be gentle here -- it's a sensitive time.

Mayor Willy Brown is trying to get all of the stoplights in San Francisco to simultaneously turn red at the time that first place hit building one (5:46 a.m.?) for one minute.

As of this morning the plan still looked sketchy. We'll see what happens tomorrow... I doubt the commuters will be very happy.

If you ask me, this is just more overkill...
I mean, like, where is the sun?

Looking at all the the locked 9/11 threads, I guess the feeling is pretty much mutual around here... smile

BTW, on this day, the Drudge Report has a hateful little banner. It says "Find Out about Clinton's role in 9/11". Of course, the alternate banner says "Celebrate America's Greatness. Official 9/11 products!"

Well, granted, but what the hell do you expect them to talk about? Martha Stewart? American Idol finalists?

I mean, this WAS kind of a big deal, you know? I've seen threads that talk about vaginal lubes and pubic hair generate more response, and somehow that seems wrong.

I'm in agreement with what has been said about using the day in ill feeling toward another batch of killing... and also, about the media over doing it - I agree with you Aero, it does dull the senses and de-sensitize...

I didn't personally know anyone directly effected and give my respect and thoughts to those that were. I don't want to watch lots of programmes about that event a year ago... I'd much rather do something more productive. To me, a sign of respect is to carry on with my own path in life, creating more love etc. What is the use and actually, what is really going on for people that cling to documentaries that are repeating the same information, time, and time again? I think it is fear.

I say let it go.
