Snow in Austin, Texas

It's snowing big-time here in Austin. We are stuck at home--and have been for two days.

It's fun having snow days though. Yippie!!! I got up really early to see if there was snow outside.

Actually this might even last through tomorrow!! lol

It's been snowing/sleeting here for a couple of hours now.. with freezing rain/sleet yesterday.

I love snow days. lol

NY (Metropolitan area) has had NO snow this season!

Just one day where everything smelt worse than usual and it made the news.

Oh.. I think this weather pattern is moving up your way? I think you might be seeing some snow, too.

Some kids are outside sleighing down some hills.. It's so cool. I was outside for a little bit.. I just came in to fix some lunch. I'll go back out soon.

I'm so excited!! lol

we barely got any snow, and i'm up in the niagara region (canada)
but BOY did we get ice! i mean there was a dusting of snow but it's all crispy and icy now... there's advisories for pedestrians because of falling powerlines and tree branches that have been frozen solid.. it's not good disbelief
police are patrolling the streets for homeless so they don't die from either burns from sleeping on sewers or from the bitter cold. sad

so in Texas does everything shut down when more than an inch accumulates? lol

we just got our first snow (shockingly) but new years we had a very nasty ice storm that snapped telephone poles in half and brought down thousands of miles of power lines, leaving entire cities without power for weeks.

here are some pictures. the pics on pages 3 and 4 (and some of the last ones on page 2) are minutes from where i live. i recognize most of those spots as familiar parts of the highways, etc.

and here's an interesting picture..... anyone notice anything wrong with the sign? lol

No.. but pretty much when it snows in Austin AND I GET TO STAY HOME AND PLAY... then I'm inclined to make a thread! lol lol

Ya'll it quit snowing. sad But it might start-up again a bit later. smile

The weird thing is that just the other day, we were predicted to have a really warm winter. In fact, there was some concern about there not being a freeze to kill-off some of the bug larvae, then in the spring we'd have problems with mosquitoes, etc. We're in the middle of a drought here actually, but we've had enough rain this past week to where the lakes have risen 4 feet. It's was getting pretty scary because the water was as low as it's been for since 20 years or so ago. It's still scary though because if we don't get more rain, and the summer is hotter than usual, the water situation might become a huge problem--more than it is now. But the experts were wrong about the freezing weather, so maybe they will be wrong about that, too.

Right now, I can't be worried about all that because I'm at home for a snow day!! (she says while gleefully jumping up and down... lol)

Oh yeah.. BTW anytime there is freezing rain, sleet, snow enough to cause hazardous driving conditions, the city shuts-down. No.. most of us Texans can't drive in icy weather. Plus we rely so much on the highway systems, that it's just a huge mess. So it's better really just to shut-down to keep us off the streets--or major highways at least. lol Like I said, there might even be a snow-day tomorrow because it's not going to get that much above freezing and we're expecting some more winter precipitation.

Oh, doesn't it snow much there?

It snowed once here so far this year and just a dusting, and we usually are snowed in for Jan and Feb. It's nutso.

No it doesn't snow much here at all. It's been awhile since our last snow-day. It probably snows more in North Texas, but in Central and South Central we don't get much snow. We get more sleet and ice than actual snow.

The weather here is unpredictable. A few years ago, I was out running some errands. It was a pretty warm day, close to spring--probably late February/early March. I stopped to buy some new drapes.. It's was like 70 something outside...maybe a warmer. Well, I started doing some work at home not paying attention to what was going-on outside.. then I heard this tapping and my dogs were barking. The temp had dropped to freezing in just a few hours, and it had started sleeting. The tapping was the sleet hitting the roof and the windows. My husband didn't get home from work until late because the traffic was such a mess to the road conditions. Then we were iced-in--with a little bit of snow--for a couple of days after that.

Good times. lol
