If you have a chance, pick up some cavier. It's damn expensive if you're lucky to find it in the States.
The St. Petersberg museum is awesome if it's not out of your way. I hauled a 50# set of wrought iron fireplace tools as carry on baggage back from there.(Didn't want the airline to lose it) The city is known for intricate historical iron gates.
When we traveled years ago, there were great flea markets with middle eastern rugs and artwork that was inexpensive.
Watch out for the pickpockets. DON'T deal with anyone who approaches you and says they need to exchange $$ for foreign currency. They're magicians when it comes to cheating you. This may sound like common sense, but some are pretty convincing.
Russia is a great place to buy a fur hat. If you like to play chess you'll have many opportunities. Great place to get a unique chess board set.

The title of this thread on the first glance looks like it's connoting some sort of a weird alternative sex change operation.

no way, sounds fun. There was some group of artists or academics or something a few years ago who had a conference on that train. Like rather than meeting at a big hotel in some city, they had the entire conference on the trans siberian train. Isn't that cool?

I guess it is. If you like enduring the smell of piss and old vodka for a week that is. Additional entertainment is provided by trying to stay away from the pickpockets and dubious salesmen that won't leave you alone for an hour. And since the toilets are hardly ever functional, at least you can just well use them to have sex with the cheap prostitutes in them.

whatever...I always appreciate the opportunity to travel, especially in places that don't enjoy the comfort and wealth we're used to here.
