What starts wars: religion or people? THINK.

Over and over I c orgers dismissing all religions by saying "Dont religions start wars?" nuts

How can a religion, besides the fact that religions aren't even tangible, start a war?

Religion may b a factor in starting wars, but do they START wars?

PEOPLE start wars...because *NEWSFLASH*... people aren't perfect. And since people arent perfect, isnt it possible that some humans may misinterpret holy books and start wars based on them? Even IF holy wars r mentioned in these books, how do we know if they apply 2 us in the present day? The Quran doesnt say "On September 11th start a war!" Why? because the Quran main message is not violent.

So this whole bullcrap about religion starting wars is just something imbeciles say. Im sorry if u r one of those imbeciles, but...u need 2 examine what ur saying when u go off on a whole religion like that. 4 some people it works, if it doesn't work 4 u then shut up, but dont suggest that they start wars when u know damn well it's people.

(And this is coming from some1 who isn't particularly have a religion and does subscribe 2 that oh-so-modern term "spiritual...but not religious.")

It was bugging me...so i got it off my chest... innocent

True,
Religion doesn't start wars in the same way that
Handguns don't hold up gas stations.

Nep2nes, I think most people who say "religion is/has been the cause of wars/violence" realize that it's people and not the religion itself that is at fault. However, religion doesn't exist in a vacuum--people read it, interpret it, proselytize and take action against others who are different. And history has a tremendous influence upon what occurs in the present--in fact, holy writings and the deeds of ancestors are extremely influential in how people today justify their actions.

And stop calling people imbeciles, especially since you'd flip out and never, ever admit to being one yourself if someone called you that... eek

Religion may not start wars but it is people's fanatical belief in RELIGION that causes man to war with each other (war being anything from bombing abortion clinics to the Spanish Inquisitions to Islamic Fundamentalists crashing planes into skyscrapers). Don't be naive about Religions powerful evil side. Religion = power in many cases and has been used to manipulate and control people since it's inception. Look at the Taliban as a great example of this.

Sorry, not gonna happen. Im smarter than 2 actually value the opinion of cyber strangers. wink That includes u.

"Religions powerful evil side" :

I believe in a CULT's powerful evil side...but religion 2 me is positive. If it isn't positive it isn't religion. At least, the Muslim and Christian religions that every1's picking apart r based on ideas that r often stretched and manipulated 2 suit political agendas. But the TRUTH about these religions r that they r here 2 promote peace.

So no, I dont think there is an "evil side" 2 religion. An evil side 2 people? Yes. Religion is sometimes the vehicle 4 that...but the religion itself doesnt do that. Whether or not it's the ideas OF the religion that people think r evil, thats essentially the same thing right?

Here you go and assume things instead of just making things easier by asking what I meant. rolleyes And just because you complimented me doesn't mean that I have to kiss your ass when I think you're not seeing the whole picture on an issue.

What I meant was that if you aren't willing to take the same criticism you dish out, then don't give it. Do Unto Others...The Golden Rule. If you don't wish to be called an imbecile, don't call others imbeciles..... brick

Then maybe u should have been clearer.

What I meant was that if you aren't willing to take the same criticism you dish out, then don't give it. Do Unto Others...The Golden Rule.

Since when did the Golden Rule apply 2 the internet? lol

Funny thing is, I AM treating people how they treat me.

Yall take this shit so seriously!!! lol Its hysterical! Golden Rule...lol... Bill Gates must have left that part out of the handbook. biggrin

Obviously I am "taking" criticism if I choose 2 respond 2 it. It's not as if I spontaneously combust upon reading criticism. U also can't blame me 4 being passionate about my ideas and defending them, if even in an aggressive way. That's just the way I am. Deal with it.

And c if u can stay on the serious topic of the thread. People who cant handle subject matter often divert attention away from the actual point. I know u can handle it so stop hijacking the thread, ok? Thanx.

Well obviously the answer is that people start wars, but often in the name of religion. It's kind of a chicken versus the egg thing.

But I have never blamed religion for any war I have always blamed the PEOPLE who start wars because of religion. Typically these people are extremists and not really representive of the "religion" that they are fighting for/over.

BTW The Chronic is probably right anyway...Money and Power are probably at the root of any war.
