When I was in Italy we got mistaken for Brits more than once. And when I've been in the UK I'm usually asked first if I'm Canadian. lol

What's that aboot?

Ya know, the only people I've ever met that actually said "aboot" were Americans trying to be funny. Canadians have a wide range of accents, some of them downright goofy, but "aboot" doesn't make it's way into anybody's speech up here.

It's ok.
Going back to the accent topic I am from the South of the U.S I live in Texas and people here usualy tell me that I have a neutral accent like the reporters on TV, and it's like people can't tell where I am from. Living here in Texas I find it surprising that I don't know people that speak like, "Hey ya'll".
The neutral accent thing is the same when I speak Spanish. Since there is a huge Latin community in Texas we know who is from what culture. I am Mexican-American, and people of other Latin cultures have totally different accents, slangs, and different words for the same things.
In the English language I can't tell the differece sometimes from an Australian and English accent. Sometimes I can not tell the difference from an English and other European English accents.
I really like spicy food. I mostly put Jalapenos on a lot of my food.

That spookydude will tell you how much the Norfolk accent (county where I live) sucks. It is truly appalling. I do not speak with any accent, and iam truly thankful for that.

Northern accent is a bit annoying, but hey, there you go.

I wonder if people around the U.S are picking up the neutral accents like the ones some news reporters speak.

I hope I am not coming across as anti-Canadian, because I love your country, and I certainly agree that Canada has a wide range of accents and of course languages. But I definitely know some Canadians that say "aboot." I'm not imagining it. To the extent I offended you, however, please accept my apology for that was not my intent.

I think its more of an east coast thing but i do have people i work with i can hear the "aboot" word come out ever so slightly. working in customer care for an american cellphone company i get to hear all kinds of accents. its amazing how accents can change from state to state. and i'm sure that it can be said for canada as well. i mean look at newfoundland. I've gotten sidetracked. all i wanted to say was i've heard it too, i'm from canada, its not just anyones imagination. i do get the sense it seems to originate from the east coast of canada.

Don't worry, no offense was taken. smile

It's just that I've been all over this country and not once actually heard "aboot" from anyone who wasn't American or joking.

For the record, when I say "about" it comes out sorta like "a bow". No t. razz

Americans have it all wrong. We don't say "aboot". We say "aboat".

I have only ever heard people from NFLD and some parts of NS say "aboot" but that's it...and I have lived all over Canada.
