I have a Southern (US) accent. That means that, despite my decent intelligence, I will always sound like I just finished a mean banjo/fiddle session with my kinfolks.

I visited a group in Australia. They were all discussing how comforting the Southern accent is. They said it's like a warm hug. I think they had a few too many Jim Beam specials. biggrin

Its hard much harder to differentiate between Australians and the English. Americans Ive found are really loud and its easy to spot a Canadian as they are more quieter and reserved to an extent.

You haven't met too many Canadians.

I like accents. Regional slang confuses me like nothing else though.

I like most Southern accents, you can usually tell where in the South someone is from by their accent.

My family is from Tennessee and when they moved to NY my two oldest brothers were held back a year in school and were forced to have speech lessons because they had Southern accents. sad I was born here so I'm NY all the way except for a few phrases that I picked up from my mother.

American accent is far more easy to understand by non-native english speakers across the glove, and it isn't just due to televsion. In fact American English is closer to old English (Victorian era English) than what they are currently speaking on the isles themselves.

Of course, individuals who speak with moronic dialects are an entirely different case (hello, new york).

When I was in Morocco, many people thought I was British, although I have an American accent. So, yes, I think it is difficult for some limited-English speakers to tell the difference b/w accents, much like I cannot distinguish a southern French accent from a northern one.

true...with me, since i moved here to minnesota people have told me that i have an accent. weird thing, because damn near everyone here has a real strong accent (the minnesota-born people, that is). i still crack up at how people sound here.

i remember one time my dad told me this funny bit he was in one day...he was born in louisiana, so he's got a southern accent. anyway, one day he was at the store and he was talking to some guy. the guy asked him, "are you from here?" ("here" meaning iowa, where he's lived for around 30 years now). my dad was like, "do i sound like i'm from here?!" lol

When I was in Italy we got mistaken for Brits more than once. And when I've been in the UK I'm usually asked first if I'm Canadian. lol
