PERFUME - THE STORY OF A MURDERER **SPOILER ALERT** Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, born in the stench of eighteenth century Paris, develops a superior olfactory sense, which he uses to create the world's finest perfumes. His work, however, takes a dark turn as he tries to preserve scents in the search for the ultimate perfume. I caught an 11:30 showing of this movie yesterday evening and WOW! Okay, visualy it was really stunning. The opening scene with the baby was incredible. Now, the rest of the plot was just too melodramatic and weird. It really got weird in the end. Don't get me wrong, I love weird, but this was WEIRD. Not the kind of weird that you coldn't follow along, just strange. I swear, if I saw the lead actor close his eyes and sniff the air one more time during the movie I was going to have to kill myself!!!! Has anyone seen this yet? I'm only sayin'..... It's so strange to be from Germany and to actually have seen a movie MONTHS before it's in the US. Usually the other way around, unless it's a big blockbuster and they starting everywhere the same week.
I thought it was alright. Book's better though.

Apparently the storyline is nothing like what you'd think it'd be.

I just love this movie.
Not because of the story, I guess it coul be a little weird but because of the smell, you can smell through the pîctures, something I never experienced in a movie before. I could smell the virgins

No, but I saw the trailer for it. It didn't look like a movie I'd want to see. But I saw The Prestige with Hugh Jackman just this Wednesday. It was alright, nothing too spectacular. Hugh Jackman was hot as usual, though. His washboard stomach and hairy, manly chest was on display a couple of times. [Edited 1/14/07 4:41am] FREE THE 29 MAY 1993 COME CONFIGURATION!

I'll have to watch this, just 'cause "Run Lola Run" is one of my favorite flicks of all time. You seen it, M? You should watch "The Princess and the Warrior" too. It's not "Lola" but it's interesting and different. I think you'd dig it.
Plus, I love Franka Potente.

'Perfume' was definately my film of 2006 Miguel.
The direction was excellent, (whomever his dp is, deserves an Oscar), the music score - stunning, the story compelling, and Ben Wishaw as Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is just a sublime casting choice (not to mention rather scrummy in a kind of low-rent kinda way). I'd not be surprised that many people would find it slow, boring, overwraught etc, (hell, I even surprised myself as i'm not one to normally go for 'period pieces' or 'costume dramas') but I think if you're prepared to go in with an open mind wanting to see something different, then you'll come out blown away by it. Personally, I thought it was absolutely bloody brilliant. Highly recommended.

I thought the lead was kinda hot too, in a weird way. I couldn't keep my eyes off of him. The reds and the greens throughout the movie were gorgeous too. I didn't find the movie slow at all. Perfume was great. I thought the big scene at the end was too long--REALLY stretched out longer than it needed to be--but the film overall is fantastic.
