Absofuckinlutely Chris i agree 100% but it appears if you believe the hype that if american football trained athletes took to the field in a soccer game then the USA would win the world cup tomorrow. One of the things I constantly get flack for is letting my American football players play sports year round instead of training for a specific sport. They are fucking kids and great athletes. Let an athlete be an athlete. My starting running back is a futballer as well as my kicker. I have a shitload of basketball and track stars, a few baseball players and a fucking golfer! When they get a college athletic scholarship thats when they should train for that sport. I also go to all of my kids athletic competitions. As a result I have a high ass turn out every year. I think there are atletes like Drogba that would make excellent American footballers and guys like Champ Bailey if they chose to learn the game of Futball who would be great. But atletes are blessed with a niche for their sport and thats why they are pros in that sport! There are snowboarders that are just as dynamic as any football. Just have a love for sport and admire athletes no matter what! I love competition, even if its hop scotch shit! Okay enough sermonizing! lol

Becks and Posh may be Scientology's next big tuna

Victoria and Tom, Katie and David, their friendship building more and more over time. Now with Tom establishing his new Viacom-free production company with Paula Wagner, his intuition that "Becks" can become a screen star as well as a footballer icon may come real, or will it?

Hollywood insiders are divided on the marquee worth of David Beckham, especially after private talk of his surprsingly un-baritone thinnish voice spread through industry offices around town.

David Beckham and Victoria are said to be big fans of America, naming their first child Brooklyn. Certainly a better choice than Flatbush, Canarsee or Yonkers.

Scientology's uber operating thetan, Tom Cruise, helped grease the wheels for the entire David Beckham move to L.A., and the New York Post reports it is fueling speculation Becks and his wife "may become the church's next celebrity converts."

The Post reported that Beckham said "a late-night phone chat with Cruise helped seal his decision to move stateside."

"I talked with [Cruise] for about an hour last night and an hour the night before," Beckham said at a news conference held yesterday to discuss his five-year, $250 million deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

"I asked him for his advice. ... He's a very wise man and a very good friend of mine. To have his experience and have him explain some things to me, that's a big favor," Beckham said in the press conference.

"He couldn't speak any higher than what he was saying about L.A."

The Post alleges Posh has "accepted church literature from her new friends."

It had been reported earlier that Posh will be cast as alien bride in "The Thetan," a Cruise-backed movie about an immortal spiritual being Scientologists believe is present in all of us.

The once mighty agency of the eighties that was home to Michael Ovitz and "his henchman", CAA, brokered the initial meeting and subsequent friendship of the two couples, reported the Post.

Victoria has been house hunting in Los Angeles, looking at available properties near Katie and Tom.

The Post and other sources cite Katie Holmes tapping into her inner agent and brokering high powered meetings for Posh in hopes of selling the idea she is a bankable star, and has used every conceivable Cruise collaborator connection including Steven Spielberg.

London's Daily Mail reported recently that Katie has been selling Posh the goods on the religion founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. Posh is "a prime target for the church, which has a dedicated wing aimed at recruiting high-profile stars." according to the Mail.

"I'm coming there not to be a superstar," Becks told the L.A. news conference via a live satellite link from Madrid. "I'm coming there to make a difference. I'm coming there to play football.

"I'm not saying me coming to the States is going to make soccer the biggest sport in America ... but I think soccer has a huge, huge potential."

The jury on soccer's elevation among other popular US sports is out on that, too.

Real Madrid president angered by Beckham's move

MADRID, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has publicly criticised David Beckham, saying he messed the club around over his future.
The former England captain announced last Thursday he would not be extending his contract with Real, but would join Los Angeles Galaxy at the end of the season.
"For months he was messing us around. He never told us he'd bought a house there and I don't think that was right," Calderon told radio station Onda Madrid on Monday.
"He deserved a better end to his time at Real Madrid."
Media reports said Victoria Beckham had travelled to the United States and was looking for a house this week.
In another interview with radio station Onda Cero, Calderon said: "I didn't like the way Beckham conducted himself, announcing publicly that he had another team, doing a video-conference..."
After Beckham made his announcement, club coach Fabio Capello said the midfielder would only train with the side and not play for the rest of the season.
The Italian said this had been a joint decision taken by the club's technical staff, including sporting director Predrag Mijatovic. He said it was not possible to rely on a player who had a contract with another club.
Beckham was left in the stands for Sunday's Primera Liga match at home to Real Zaragoza, which Real won 1-0..
Sources in Major League Soccer have suggested Beckham may now try to bring forward his departure from Real to coincide with the start of the season in the United States in April.
Beckham has signed a five-year deal with the Galaxy which will be worth abount $250 million excluding existing sponsorship deals.
Calderon also confirmed that Brazil striker Ronaldo did not feature in Capello's plans along with Beckham and Italian striker Antonio Cassano

Beckham wants to join Galaxy in spring

Monday, January 15, 2007
Associated Press

MADRID, Spain – Frozen out by his Real Madrid coach, David Beckham wants to join the Los Angeles Galaxy this spring rather than complete the remaining six months of his contract with the Spanish club.

Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber said Beckham's lawyers are trying to arrange an early release from Madrid, and the Galaxy can't afford to buy out the star midfielder's contract, the Spanish daily Marca reported.

Garber said the Galaxy would like to have Beckham as early as possible, and the 31-year-old Englishman is ready to make the move. The MLS season starts in April.

"We have to wait and see what the details of his Real Madrid contract are, and if he can get out of it," Galaxy coach Frank Yallop told British newspapers. "Under normal circumstances he would join us in August, but we will see if he can come sooner."

A Beckham representative said the player still intends to fulfill his Madrid contract.

"Until the club sits down with him to address the situation, David will continue to train with Real Madrid until the end of the season with his usual professionalism," spokesman Simon Oliveira told The Associated Press.

Beckham announced last week he would join the Galaxy in August after his contract with Madrid expires in June. The five-year U.S. deal reportedly is worth $250 million in salary and endorsements.

Victoria Beckham, the player's pop star wife, arrived in Los Angeles on Saturday, presumably to look at homes and schools for the couple's children.

Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello said earlier that day that Beckham would no longer play in games now that he has committed to another club and would only train with teammates. That leaves Beckham with the prospect of no competitive soccer for six months.

On Sunday, Capello criticized Beckham for signing with the Galaxy before informing Real Madrid.

"He signed his contract before he spoke with Madrid and for me that doesn't seem right," Capello said after Madrid's 1-0 win over Real Zaragoza, a game Beckham watched from a spectator box along with his mother, Sandra, at Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

"If a player has a contract with another club it isn't right that you continue to treat him as just another player," he added

Oliveira said Beckham disclosed his plans to club officials in a meeting before signing with the MLS club.

This Yank believed, believes and will believe, that futbol is a beautfiully played and designed sport with great athletes and passionate . . . well, overly passionate . . . well, maniacal . . . fans. It is the world's sport.

See, when this thread started, the discussion veered into some wildly uninformed opinions by some of you footy fans about the lack of athleticism in American football vis-a-vis soccer. That has to be the dumbest sports-related argument any of you have ever made in this community. The primary measures of athleticism include, but are not limited to, speed, strength, size and endurance. Indicia of athleticism include, but are not limited to, mastery of more than one sport. I.e., can those skills translate well in other sports. If any of you people knew anything about football or the cats who play it, you'd know that by those measures, many if not most of them are better athletes than soccer players.

The comparison made on this site presumes for the sake of argument both sets of athletes would be trained to play the other's sport. Us so-called arrogant Yanks submit that the footballers fare better in the soccer arena than the futbol-er's would on the football field.

The fact you got personal speaks volumes about your class, such as it is, and home training, which apparently is non-existent. But I guess the so-called real world is still plagued with small minds.

Here endeth the whipping, partner.

and here, again, is where you are wrong. there are some fast ballers, sure. but football (futbol) takes very different skills than just being fast. agility, precision, control, grace, etc.... and american footballers just don't measure up.

your belief is that american footballers are better than footballers (soccer players), am i correct? you have been saying that if american footballers chose to play soccer they would excel at the game so far that america would win "the little gold thing" that the best-of-the-best in the world compete for every four years. remember saying that? this is complete and total arrogance on your part. you say you know soccer, you say you've played soccer. how old were you, 5? 6? lol not much skill involved at that age. from your comments made so far about how much you know of soccer i get the feeling that the competitions you were in were DEFINITELY not at the same level that we are discussing here. but if american football players tried to compete on the professional level of football.... they wouldn't survive a match. they just don't possess the same skills. they can run fast with their feet sure, but can they also control a football? i get the feeling if any tried they'd fall flat on their faces! lol

NFL quarterbacks can throw a ball to a precise location up to 60 yards on the field.

lol sure they can throw, but soccer isn't about throwing. you can't even use your hands in the sport! that's my point!! american footballers couldn't do it. it's not about skill with the arms, it's about skill with the REST of the body!! lol

Every American knows the best athletes don't play soccer because that's not where the money is. Yet the United States is increasingly competitive in each successive World Cup competition. It ain't rocket science, fantasyislander. If you can compete without your best athletes, it only stands to reason that if your best athletes take up soccer, they will do even better.

this is true, assuming of course that the best american football athletes would excel at soccer which is what i'm arguing against. they may be the best in their game, but that does not mean that their skills and talent would transfer into the game of soccer. they might do ok in the sport, but to really excel in the sport takes a different set of skills than the game in which they currently excel. just like i know that soccer players would probably do "ok" but not excel in the game of american football, b/c it's a different set of skills needed. this is why i say you don't seem to know much about the game of soccer. if you're so easy to pass off the skills needed, then i doubt you actually paid attention to those games you attended.

i never claimed to be an expert at american football. i can't stand the game. i find it highly boring and frustrating. but i recognize that the skills they use are different than skills used in soccer/football.
