He'll be famous for being famous here in the US. My bet is that about 3 people will watch him play soccer. That's not an indictment of him. "Futbol" is a distant, distant, distant second to the sports played on the gridiron and the hardwood here in the US of A.

You know a soccer player is way over the hill when they sign up for a US team. As a matter of fact, I don't think Beckham ever was on top of the hill. He got stuck about half way and just rolled back down again.

becks is a great player. during world cup he was constantly a saving grace for england. unfortunately for him, he is one of the rare players who has garnered US fame so he is also one of the most criticized players.

he is getting to old for the game, though, and its a smart move for him AND mls to get him here in the states. it'll bring some much needed attention to the US game and he'll be certain to break the US audience once and for all. lord knows he's been desperate for it for years.

My guess is the league pitched in for this contract because only the Yankees have AND are willing to spend that kind of jack for a player. I know futbol fans like yourself are passionate about the sport. But the fanbase isn't large enough to support such player contracts.

BUT, with the large Hispanic presence in L.A., there may be some interest in seeing the guy play.
