When someone asks you a question and talks over you when you start to answer

WHAT THE HELL IS THAT ABOUT?!?! bawl

Analyses and explanations needed, seriously.

And is there a polite way of saying "if you'd shut the fuck up, I could answer your question"?

Thanks in advance, chickadees. kiss2

I am guilty of talking over people sometimes.

It's just because I am far more interesting than they are and what I have to say is more important than anything they could possibly say.

I think it has to do with self-absorption. The person who is asking aks out of interest, but the attention-span for issues about anything not relating to the person who asks is pretty much non-existant, so the person who asks quickly moves on to hearing him/herself talk again. biggrin

Did that help? confused

That's actually my problem as well. I can get pretty animated at times. I've never been told off over it before though...yet.

I do notice that I do it and am constantly telling myself to shut up and just listen.

so do you mold some of this fascinating pontification of yours in question form so people will attempt to answer you rather than just walking away after you've succeeded in making their ears bleed with your epiphinal blather?

To be honest. I don't even bother asking them questions. It's not like I actually care to hear anything about them.

i HAD A FRIEND WHO WAS WORSE than me (oops caps lock but cant be bothered to edit) and I must say I found it annoying but I just cant seem to help it.. its in my nature.. and if I wait to ask a question AFTER the person has finished talking, I either havben forgotten what it is I wanted to say, or I have lost interest.. redface

I had several friends that were this way ... i found a kind loving way to tell them how rude it was of them to expect me to constantly listen to them when they could not stop running their mouths long enough to listen to me in return ( trust me i dont talk much so that isnt asking for much !! )

So now ... they don't talk to me at all
the only job i served in their lives was to listen to them go on and on and how dare I expect to be heard in return

it was / is painful ...friends i have known for 30 yrs

Well, that doesn't really address my question, now does it? But it does lend consistency to the way you describe your character! lol

Ask Oprah. She perfected the art of asking somebody a question and then cutting them off before they answer it. It's the "I don't care about your answer but damn if I don't ask some good ass questions" syndrome.

well, babble-holics in general are a big pet peeve of mine, and YES, i DO feel like they're energy vampires in a way, but i'm most vexed with the act of someone asking me a question - which i would ASSUME they'd like me to answer - and then when i start to reply, they just keep on jabbering!

in the incident this morning which prompted me to start this thread, i just talked while they kept talking. oddly, this seemed to be what they wanted. maybe they have some mutant power where they can listen to someone while they keep on yip yappin' along.

lol How many people POST over each other...? Not fully reading someones opinions and posts, but just carry on in heated discussion/argument disregarding others views here, cos they believe THEY are always right?

Shit makes me laugh.. lol

nod this is really the problem I had in the freindships as well ... I noticed they REALLY didnt want my answers they we asking me the question so that they could sound off their own answers to their questions

it was exausting for me to constantly have to hold back and hush up to let them to continue to flow on and on ...

one asked me why i never really said much so i was honest with her and told her ... i guess the honesty floored her cuz like i stated...she doesnt talk to me now at all ...guess she found another to be her silent sound off board lol

i went through a little phase where i was brutally honest with babble-holics. one of them i was dating, and when we broke up, i told him that he needed to talk less and listen more. i think my exact words were, "you know, you like to talk. a LOT. maybe TOO MUCH." lol

and one girl who i used to work with i literally had to tell to quit talking to me because after about an hour of her blathering, she was literally making my ears hurt!

and the crazy thing is, i mean, people who blabber on and on and on usually tend to have very little substance to their monologues, but they have to describe every moment of their story down to a submolecular level, like they're freakin proust or something. meanwhile, most people i know who have led amazing lives, you gotta light a fire under them to get them to tell a good story. it's not fair! lol
