To what extent do you think warnings on vices are over the top?

Why is it that they have those big dirty black warning signs on cig packets saying, 'SMOKING KILLS' etc when everybody knows the dangers smoking does to your health already? It just makes the pack look more grim. There were also plans to introduce such labels to cans of alcholic drinks. Do you think its all all a bit too far fetched and that our governemtns are getting a bit hysterical?

Has to do with government laws and cigarette co.'s liability. If you have been warned the hazards to your health smoking causes, and choose to smoke YOU are responsible for any damage caused. Without the warning the cigarette company is responsible. Thus the past lawsuits the large cig manufacturers have lost and shelled out $$$ for.

Absolutely not. The warnings are to protect the public. Believe me, if everything smoking does to your body were printed on a pack of cigs there would need to be a fold out pamphlet.

Notice how every film u see advertised on tv now tells you what to expect in terms of violence etc...?

Example being a U rated movie:

"may contain mild peril"

I mean, damn, how fucking sad is that lol

U reckon a parent is really going to reconsider seeing said movie, after looking at a poster or tv ad and wonder "well, my little Robbie may be upset by this. It contains mild peril! Better go home then just in case"

I guess its like what xplnyrslf said, its to protect the film companies from people suing them. Its still insane though

I wish the local news had warnings--

"Tonight's news contains war carnage, sexual assault, innocent bystander death, and bad makeup."

I got a back massager for Christmas this year. It looks like a car seat cover, so I KINDA understand the warning that it was not made to be used while driving, but the warning to not use it in the shower or bath?

disbelief
I'm firmly planted in denial

They already have labels on beer bottles don't they?

Doesn't it say something, like don't operate heavy machinery or something like that?

I don't think they're over the top at all, nor do I think they're a genuine attempt to get people to think about the consequences. The government pay lip service to anti-smoking organisations whilst taking tax from smokers. Hipocracy is what I'd call it.
