There's good broad spectrum antibiotics that treat pneumonia. She needs to be cultured and find the right one. If you live in cold weather, it exacerbates COPD. Worse comes to worse, there's steroids which really do reduce inflammation and swelling in lung tissue. She should have a Pulmonologist who specializes in treatment.

She's getting Albuterol breathing treatments and I'm sure they'll put her on steroids for a week or so when she's discharged.

A CT scan in less than 5 min does detailed sections of the lung. You'll find out more. It does a head to toe angle of isolated segments of the chest. Xrays do anterior. posterior and lateral angles. If she's seeing a pulmonary specialist, keep in mind, he knows more about the lungs than an ER Doc. If he's wrong about the pneumonia at least he's ordering the right study to determine what it is.

That's what I'm worried about... sigh
But, I guess it all boils down to how she's feeling. They've got her on Levaquin (sp?) IV.

Levofloxacin.....wikipedia has info on it.Treats nosocomial pneumonia. If she's responding to the antibiotic that could be a good sign.?

Thanks again to all of you grouphug

I talked with her today...she sounds a bit better and the doctor told her that her white bloodcell count went from 28 to 21...which is good (he said normal is under 10).
She sounds better today, but the doctor is still saying she has pneumonia. I talked to one of the therapists at her pulmonary rehab and she said that sometimes her disease flare-ups can mimic pneumonia.
So, I don't know...it's tough to say, but all that counts is that she's starting to improve smile

I think it's working.

I saw mom last night...she was sitting up in bed...talking...still weak, but her feisty self is coming back. I think even if it's pneumonia (which it probably will be) she may have not sustained much permanent damage. smile
She's still on the antibiotics and breathing treatments and had another x-ray yesterday. She must have been a little loopy when she told me about the CT scan...she said they didn't do it this time...that they did it the LAST time she was there.

I just talked to her on the phone and she says she wants to get strong enough so she can get out of bed on her own.

Thanks, Chris. I feel positive.
It's just that she's so frail - she weighs about 98 lbs - and these sicknesses hit her so hard and so fast. If my sister and I hadn't gone over to her house she probably would have died in the night.
It's scary.

I got a bit worried at the top of this thread before seeing this post. Hope she continues to feel better and tell her if I was there I'd fill her in on all the Aussie news reports. razz
