Same problem here. I guess mine is mostly stress related, but it still sucks.
Sleeping pills don't seem to help much because they take too long to kick in, and the next morning they take too long to wear off. Right now, I use foam earplugs and a sound machine (Homemedics Sound Spa). All I can end up hearing is the faint noise from the sound machine through the earplugs, and nothing else, so it helps me zone out and go to sleep.

Not that it's noisy here, I'm just sensitive. I sometimes do the same as you, earplugs, and I turn on a fan. Even if there's no noise for that stuff to block, it puts my mind at ease. I might have to look into the sound machine. Whatdoes it sound like? My Legacy

JC Penneys got em for 20 bucks, or a pro version with a clock thats like 50 bucks. Sharper Image also sells some nice models for around 80 bucks.

But it's tracks of river, ocean, bird sounds, etc. But each track is only 7 minutes or so. Not much point in environments that only last 7 minutes! My Legacy

I used to tune my clock radio to white noise when I was a kid, so it would be constant all night
