I just picked up the Cuisinart burr grinder for about $50, and it made a huge difference in the taste of my coffee (I was having a problem with the coffee tasting burnt and bitter). The bitter and burnt taste comes from grinding the coffee for too long. Some people like that burnt, strong taste, so they grind their coffee for a few minutes, which is also required for certain types of coffee ( for instance, Turkish mocca or Italian espresso). The shorter the grinding process, the milder your coffee will taste...but it will taste too weak if you don´t grind it long enough because if the beans don´t get crushed enough the water won´t absorb the aroma. It´s a thin line between burnt and bitter and a strong flavor and aroma. I always use an oldschool grinder with blades, probably thirty years old.
