It's an early Fellini work, not stream of consciousness New Wave material that one usually associates with Fellini. It's much more conventionally structured, charming, and full of pathos. You might love it!

It's definitely worth it for the payoff though. My druggie friend forced me to watch it and I still find the message fascinating.

I know this has become part of mainstream conciousness here in this country but for those who have not seen it:
A story about a cross dressing alien who happens to have 2 unwitting visitors stumble on his castle. Seduction, science, murder, betrayal.....this film has it all Complete with a cast and crew of incredible misfits, this is one hell of a tale . Especially if you watch it at 4 in the morning like I'm doing now.... The music is great though...for the dramatic parts, instead of using instruments, they literally just have ppl going "DAAAAA DOOT DAHHHHH!!!!!" and "dum duh dum duh dum." edit: ok i take back the part about no instruments, there's definitely some triangle and woodblock in there [Edited 1/6/07 1:21am]

There's a maid and a few other folks staying in the same house. Basically everyone in the movie becomes obsessed with him and he represents a sort of sexual Christ figure.

Really weird Czech New Wave film:
Daisies by Věra Chytilová (1966) The entire film is tripped-out, but if you analyze each scene it's really heady.

heartbeatocean said: Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song by Melvin Van Peebles That was the one I was going to say, too. My friends & I saw it as a two part thing about Melvin at some art house theater in NY. Fortunately, they showed a documentary about Melvin [How to Eat Your Watermelon in the Company of White Folks & Enjoy It(?)] before Sweet Sweetback, otherwise I really would have been like, "wtf?" I wonder how Mario feels about that opening scene... I was expecting it to have more of a Black Power/political angle as that's how it was advertised; and I tried to start a thread here about it's influence on blaxploitation films but that pretty much dropped like a lead balloon. Barney's Cremaster Series is definitely weird, too. I know you like his work (you mentioned it on an art you like thread), but I think he's one of the most overrated contemporary artists. I'd also add 12 Monkeys. I tried to watch it b/c we talked about La Jetee in one my art history seminars and 12 Monkeys is based on La Jetee, but I had to turn it off cause I couldn't follow it. Maybe I should try again. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I was expecting it to have more of a Black Power/political angle as that's how it was advertised; and I tried to start a thread here about it's influence on blaxploitation films but that pretty much dropped like a lead balloon. A long time ago, there was a another thread about that movie that got several hits. I was surprised how many people had seen it. Barney's Cremaster Series is definitely weird, too. I know you like his work (you mentioned it on an art you like thread), but I think he's one of the most overrated contemporary artists.
I found the Cremaster Cycle absolutely revelatory and soothing but since that experience I have had no desire to see any follow up, i.e. Drawing Restraint 9. While it was an exciting experience for me, I feel it would be monotonous to go back for more. I don't know if that makes it good or bad. Maybe sort of trendy, yeah.
