The Cowboys still win a thriller against themselves and TO, of course, takes all the credit and announces that he has signed a contract with the Miami Dolphins to be their new coach/star wide receiver.

SEAHAWKS vs. COWBOYS GAME AT A GLANCE
The Seattle Seahawks (9-7) will host the Dallas Cowboys (9- 7) this Saturday in an NFC Wild Card matchup. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. PT, and the game will be televised nationally on NBC.

Seattle entered the postseason tournament after winning their third consecutive NFC West title. Before last season, the team had never won consecutive division titles. The Seahawks also ended a five-season NFL streak in which the Super Bowl runner up has not made the following postseason. Seattle became just the second team (Tennessee, 2000) in the last eight seasons to return to the playoffs having lost the previous Super Bowl.

For Seattle, this was their fifth division title in club history, and fourth since Mike Holmgren took over in 1999. Seattle won the AFC West in 1988 and 1999, and has now won the NFC West from 2004-06.

Seattle did not have to play in a Wild Card game last season having earned home-field advantage with an NFC best 13-3 record. Their run to Super Bowl XL included wins over Washington in the Divisional Round and Carolina in the NFC Championship Game.

In 2004, the Seahawks hosted the St. Louis Rams in a Wild Card matchup, only to fall 27-20 on January 8 at Qwest Field. The previous year, the Seahawks lost an epic overtime thriller at Green Bay, 33-27.

Before earning the playoff bid in 2003, the Seahawks previous playoff game was 1999, after winning the AFC West in Mike Holmgren’s first season with the team. Before 1999, Seattle had not reached the postseason dance since 1988 when they came up short in the divisional playoff against Cincinnati, 21-13, on December 31.

The Seahawks earned a playoff berth in 1987 as well with a 9-6 record, but failed to advance past the first round after a 23-20 overtime loss at Houston against the Oilers on January 3, 1988.

Before last season, arguably Seattle’s finest season was 1984, posting a franchise best 12-4 record; but they only advanced to the second round. After defeating the Raiders, Seattle dropped their second-round matchup to the Miami Dolphins, 31-10.

Seattle marched to their only other conference championship game following the 1983 season after entering as a Wild Card participant. The Seahawks defeated Denver at home, 31-7, and Miami on the road, 27-20, before falling to the Raiders 30-14 on January 8, 1984.

Seattle is 5-8 all time in the postseason and 4-2 at home. The Seahawks have become familiar with their Wild Card opponent in recent years. Seattle and Dallas have faced off in the regular season in 2004 and 2005, both at Qwest Field. They also squared off in the preseason in 2005 and earlier this preseason, both of them also played in Seattle. Dallas won the 2004 shootout 43-39, while the Seahawks used a last-second 50-yard field last season to prevail 13-10.

Seattle is 4-6 all time versus Dallas; however, the Seahawks have won three of the last four games dating back to 2001.

NFL Playoffs Preview: Dallas at Seattle

SEATTLE (Jan. 3, 2007) -- Neither the Seattle Seahawks nor the Dallas Cowboys finished the regular season in impressive fashion, but both teams know they have a chance to create some momentum when their "new season" begins.

The Seahawks and Cowboys will look to put their recent struggles behind them and open the playoffs with a solid victory when they meet at Qwest Field in an NFC wild-card game Jan. 6.

Seattle (9-7) won the NFC West for the third consecutive season, although it was without quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and 2005 NFL MVP Shaun Alexander for much of the season with injuries.

However, even when they did get Hasselbeck and Alexander together in the same backfield, the reigning NFC champs still looked shaky; they finished the season losing three of their final four games.

"Our record isn't what we had hoped, to be honest with you, but there's something about 9-7 being a lot better than 8-8 -- even though it's just one game," Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said. "The players feel that, and I think the organization does. Now we start our new season."

Dallas' season also ended in disappointment, as it also lost three of four and failed to cash in on an opportunity for a first-round bye. The Cowboys got crushed by NFC South champion New Orleans 42-17 on Dec. 10, and with a chance to still win the NFC East title on Dec. 31, they lost 39-31 at home to lowly Detroit.

"We haven't been playing well of late, but it's a new season," Terrell Owens said. "We have one game. Once we win that, we can keep going."

Dallas lost to eventual NFC East champion Philadelphia 23-7 on Christmas Day, and the loss to the Lions gave the team back-to-back losses for the first time all season.

The Cowboys defense has given up 132 points in the past four games, the exact amount it gave up over the previous eight games.

"I can't tell you how disappointed I am. I really can't," coach Bill Parcells said after the Week 17 loss. "This is the low point for me in a long time."

While the Dallas defense is struggling, the NFL's No. 6 team in total offense (6,003 yards) and No. 4 team in scoring offense (26.6 points per game) is looking shaky behind Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo.

Romo lost two fumbles, suffered an interception and was sacked a season-high four times Dec. 31, and has not been able to provide the same spark he brought to the team when he became the starting quarterback in Week 8.

The Cowboys went 4-1 under Romo in his first five starts, completing 71.2 percent of his passes for 1,394 yards, 10 touchdowns and two interceptions for a 115.8 passer rating. His past five games have been a letdown, though -- he completed 60.5 percent for 1,247 yards, six TDs and eight interceptions for a 77.1 passer rating, while leading Dallas to only two victories.

"We are definitely going in backwards from the way we wanted to," Romo said. "We may not scare anyone right now. We win a game or two and that will change.

"This story won't be written about the last two games. It will be written about what happens from here on. We have a chance to do something special."

Julius Jones finished the regular season with 1,084 rushing yards for his first 1,000-yard season, but had only 91 yards and no touchdowns in 33 attempts over his past three games.

Jones had a career day in his only game against the Seahawks, though, rushing for career highs of 198 yards and three TDs in the Cowboys' 43-39 victory on Dec. 6, 2004.

Dallas has lost three of four games against Seattle since 2001, including a 13-10 defeat at Qwest Field on Oct. 23 of last season. The teams have never met in the playoffs.

Shaun Alexander seems to be hitting his stride just in time for the playoffs.
The Cowboys have not won a playoff game since 1996, losing in the wild-card round in their past three trips to the postseason.

Agreed. But how comes Parcells didn't go for it on 4th down though? I thought that was his best shot because at that point I think they could have scored the TD and even if they didn't, look at Seattle's field position? Dallas would more than likely have gotten the ball back with more time on the clock. I was yelling at him, GO FOR IT! I guess he didn't hear me from my armchair.

what a crazy hawks cowboys game... Romo is not ready for high pressure situations yet... you gotta have a killer instinct...that goes for Parcells too, I'm shocked at some of his play calling in the 4th qtr...

I still don't think the seattle go far... the saints will rep the NFC in the superbowl....

Wow, tough game. Both teams played about equal. In the end Seattle's defense stood strong and pulled the win.
Saving the the game. Some might call it luck. But that is football. The field decides. Go Seahawks! I'll take it!

Yeah I feel for him too....not only because of the gaffe, but also because of all the hype that the sports media heaped on him when he replaced Bled-slow...this guy now has to hear all of the crap about how he wasn't ready...he couldn't handle it...blah blah blah....from the same yahoos who voted him to the Pro Bowl as the 1st backup QB.....its sad that before the Saints exposed how to play him, the "experts" were exhaulting him as if he was Montana reincarnated.....I like the guy, so I hope he recovers....

It's such a game of inches...Witten was thisclose to locking up the game, even Romo on his last ditch effort, was tackled just inches from another first down (when that play happened I thought he made the first down)
