Are there certain manners of speaking which really urk you? From travelling it really gets to me when people say 'Im doing Vietnam' or 'We're doing Cambodia'. What do you mean by 'doing' it!? Why cant you just say 'travelling to'?! I also dislike people calling university 'uni'. Reminds me of that unicorn in 'Dungeons and Dragons'.

Anyway, what about you?

I used to hate people saying "uni" until I went there Somehow its just easier!

I hate people who say "actually" all the time when it doesnt even make sense. And various other grammar snob things

Also folks who talk like they're asking a question after every sentence.

I can't stand people using 'hella' all the time when they talk...it's so annoying. I think it's some weird central California thing because I've only noticed it since I came here for school.

I can't stand it when somebody uses "random" or "randomly" as adjectives at inappropriate times for EVERY FREAKING WORD! Once in a while's alright, but Good Fucking God, some people take it way too far.

"So I randomly called in sick at work today and I randomly went to the mall instead and this random guy asked me out then I randomly went to the food court and had some random chinese food."

I wish that was an exaggeration.

But it seems like so many people here in the 14-19ish age group use the word ALL THE TIME. You know what some used to say about a person who swears all the time, that they do it because of a limited vocabulary? I'm sure it's the same thing here.

I think it's one of those apologetic words that are used to decrease the significance of what you're saying so that you won't seem like you think you're too original and innovative (and thereby seem arrogant), right?

It's fascinating in general that the Brits are so much wordier than the Americans when they're talking. Lots of relative clauses, tag questions and other grammatical filler being inserted all over the place. On the other hand, Americans can be a bit too concise sometimes. Everything is summarized in standardized expressions that take away from the individuality of the speaker.

It's mainly the intonations of the way one says "obviously" that gets to me. I'm quite a concise person when I talk, which often serves to hamper me when I'm out socialising - I don't do idle chit-chat bullshit.

The preface "Don't get angry/upset with me for saying this...." or any variation of that same theme. If what you're about to say needs to be introduced with a warning, a disclaimer or the elicitation of a promise on my part to not subsequently react, it might be better to just come right out and SAY whatever it is you are about to say, with no setup. Just give it to me cold.

When "like" is used 20,000+ times, before almost every word in a sentence. On a related note, when a conversation is being recounted and is peppered with "Then I was like.." and "And then he/she was like...", or "Then I go..." "Then he/she goes.." The preceding is made more annoying when the speaker cannot even articulate the mental state or reactions of the conversation they are describing, and instead rely on gestures or vaguaries to convey meaning: "So I was like HUH? [while bugging out eyes], or "He/she was like 'Yeah whatever'" [shrugging shoulders].

"I just threw up in mouth a little." Amusing the first three billion times, but now it merely sets my teeth on edge.

Trendy slang in general.

I work in the legal realm, and lawyers are prone to over use the owrd "arguably".

I also dislike sports fans who put themselves on the team by saying "we won the game", "we are a powerhouse on the field", "we played well".....where does the we enter the picture? The sports fans are sitting on their asses watching the game from their recliner chair or the stadium seats.....not out on the field on the receiving end of physical contact.....
