Death in Venice Anyone seen it? Apparantly it caused a bit of a fuss at the time of release (iam guessing early 70's?) Very arty, with virtually no dialogue at all. Its a very moving piece of work though. Dirk Bogarde shoulda at least got oscar nominated for his role.

A famous composer has a heart attack (i think) or someone and so his P.A insist he takes a holiday to unwind. He then obsesses about a young boy. I wouldn't want to spoil it, but i swear it is not hard to stomach like maybe "lolita" is. Its not about abuse, which may be confusing, but its true. The music is quite stunning aswell.

Yeah, I've seen the movie. If you're of the poetic type, understand European films and are in one of those brooding moments, you can actually get through it. If you like a lot of action and dialogue in your films, you may as well pass on it. It is well done in my opinion. Unfortunately, everyone went for the sexual gist of it and if you approach it from this angle, the guy will be a pediphile's patron saint. However, this guy is uptight and German and is a musician who is REALLY into his music, so much so that you can hear Billy going to the Kid "your music makes sense to no one but yourself." Yeah, it's like that. He goes to Venice and sees this little boy and he is so beautiful that everything that this man epitamizes as pure and "right" with the world is embodied in this little boy for him. So he follows the kid around basically just staring at him through entire film. By watching this kid he reminisces about his past and what went wrong with his life. What's funny is this kid is digging the attention. He fucks with this poor man through the whole film prancing around him and taunting him. You have to see it at least once to see what I mean. I won't tell you the ending and spoil it.

the original book by Thomas Mann? lol. Unless you want bragging rights among the scholarly, do you really want to read the book. Just getting through the movie is enough. The book's okay IMO. I only made it halfway through it because I was studying German at the time. LQ
