Don't call him back. You are on vacation. There is a rule I follow, when going on vacation, don't give out phone numbers, cell phone, hotel, etc.

I know of a friend whose employer called them at the hotel asking if they could come back to work earlier

How much bother is a phone call?? It would be considerate of your boss, not to mention fellow workers and MINIMAL time on your part to respond.
I have alot of accumulated paid time off. I'll take a week off here and there, stay home and work on a stained glass window. If the boss calls I'll go in to help out. I also get the maximum allowed pay raise with my evaluations, plus twice a year bonus checks.
Do you not like your boss or co-workers???
